CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
Capital Punishment by definition is “a legal process whereby a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime”. When looking at the death penalty system in action, we can clearly see that the only purpose it serves is retribution or revenge; it is seriously flawed in application. The flaw that is presented is that there is a serious and continuing risk of executing innocent people. And, it costs much more than life in prison. If we look at the statistics, about 130 people wrongfully convicted people were sentenced to death and were lucky to be exonerated and released, eventually in past few years. DNA, which is available in less than 10% of all homicides, can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people. If someone is convicted and later found innocent you can release him from prison, but obviously not from the grave. Speeding up the death penalty process has been something that people believe will be beneficial, but there are problems and circumstances with speeding up the process. About 40% of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade and speeding up the process will only increase the risk of executing innocent people. Also, the death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder, which is ultimately the goal. There is no reliable study that shows the death penalty scaring others and them not committing serious crimes. If someone is going to kill, they are going to kill, death penalty or not because that is there motive and it happens more often than we think. Also, I found that homicide rates are actually higher in states and regions that have Capital Punishment compared to states that don’t.
In recent studies, it shows that life without parole, on the books in 48 states, has a bigger impact on preventing reoffending. Life without parole also costs less than the death penalty. The death penalty is much more expensive than life in prison, mostly because of the upfront costs of the legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people. It is costing the people more money to kill a person than to keep them in prison for life. It is understandable that a person convicted of murder is wrong in many more ways than one and is going to jail for killing which we consider the worst of all crimes, yet we are willing to do the same thing and in a sense play God.
Crime and punishment are two topics that are dealt with in many different ways, in diverse states, as well as countries. If we look at countries, every country uses prison sentences as the consequence for serious crimes, such as robbery or murder. However, the traditional ways of dealing with crime are not always the best ways to deal with it. There may be other approaches, such as treatment or education programs, that could be more effective. The two main reasons for this would be that punishment does not reform criminals, and it does not deal with the real causes of crime.
Overall, the main goal of punishment should be to reduce crime and to make people less likely to commit these crimes again. In addition to putting a stop to the crime sprees, it also needs to change the behavior of the criminals in order for them to be safe members of society. The way we punish criminals these days does not have a positive effect at all. In some cases locking a prisoner away is a good idea and a safe one at that, but sometimes, depending on the crime, locking criminals away only makes them worse. In most countries, there are a lot of repeat offenders. I think that this is because once they get out of prison, they are likely to commit crimes and when they are in an out of prisons, they have to experience dangerous conditions mixed with other criminals.
To reduce crime in an effective way, we have to deal with the real causes, not just punish people who break the law. There have been studies that have shown several cases where people commit crimes because of poverty. The poor neighborhoods of big cities are always where most serious crime happens and are usually home to gangs, drugs, and violence. More crime occurs because of these factors in these neighborhoods and instead of drug users getting help, or any criminal of these factors receiving any kind of help to become better people, we punish them solely, which is not reducing crime.
Rather than just prison sentences, criminals need education and treatment as we. They could be educated and learn new job skills as well as get the psychiatric and medical help they need, whether they are battling addiction or a mental illness. This would teach them ways of making a living instead of getting involved in crime all over gain. This kind of system would prepare people for a better life after prison if they have a chance to get out. It’s like the officials would be focusing on the actual causes of the crime and finding ways to reduce a reoccurrence. Although it is very different from the system of punishment that we are used to, this kind of system would be more effective than just imprisonment alone. Although it does seem unfair to help criminals rather than only punishing them, treatment and education is a better additional solution that benefits everyone by reducing crime.

The death penalty is set in place to punish individuals for the most violent crimes. Its purpose to keep the death penalty legal was to deter people from doing these horrible crimes. That attempt has failed terribly. According to a report conducted by the National Research Council, it was said that we could not depend on the death penalty to deter the effect of murder rates. “Claiming that the death penalty has a deterrent effect on murder rates are fundamentally flawed and should not be used when making policy decisions” (Radelet & Locock, 2012).…

Law is good. Man, in his needs, has different motivations for law in society. His secular needs require striving for justice, social stability, and punishment. However, in the area of religious influence, law should promote morality so that believers can get close to God or be separated and condemned by God. As man and society evolves, the purpose of law has remained the same – to punish and deter.…

Capital punishment is outdated, irreversible, hypocritical, and ineffective and deterring criminals, and should therefore be abolished. There are many things wrong with executing criminals, but some of the most compelling reasons are these: it is barbaric, does not positively affect murder rates, and to put it simply, two wrongs do not make a right.…

“Nobody, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man’s mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in contrary direction at the time.” (Laurence Sterne) In Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, it is this exact miscalculation that leads the protagonist Raskolnikov (Rodya) to his ultimate mental, physical and social demise. Similarly, the theme of the novel directly correlates to Sterne’s quote, as Dostoyevsky delves into the psychology of a criminal, centering the novel on a murder and its after-affects on the transgressor.…

The death penalty is never the right choice. In America last year fifty three people were executed, and at this time in the USA over 3500 people are on death row. The amount of people on death row shows that the use of Capital punishment is not decreasing crime in America. Therefore Capital Punishment has no point. The latest country to abolish the death penalty for all crimes was Albania in early 2007. The abolition of Capital Punishment in Albania shows that the death penalty obviously doesn 't work. The country tried using it and it failed. Since 1973, there were 138 death row exonerations in the United States. That 's 138 innocent people who were mistakenly sentenced to death in a U.S. Court room, and later had their convictions overturned due to further research in light of new evidence. The fact is: the death penalty is much more of a retribution measure than a preventative measure. There is no clear cut proof that the death penalty will prevent people from killing each other…

In Dostoyevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment the main character plots and carries out the murder of an old woman who has a considerable amount of money in her apartment. After killing the old women, he steals her money and argues that she was a malicious women; useless to society and herself. He goes on to state that the old women’s life causes no happiness to her or to others. For the old women’s money; the main character argues that if found after her death, the money would only fall into the hands of chisellers anyway, whereas he would use it to pay for his education. In terms of main stream society, Dostoyevsky’s main characters’ action more likely than not wouldn’t be proven ethically justifiable, but according to the moral standard of Utilitarianism the reason behind the main characters plot can be justifiable whereas the concept of Wickedness purposed by Stanley Ben clearly states the main character actions where evil and unethical.…

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment is told primarily from the point of view of the main character Raskolnikov but occasionally switches to the perspective of minor characters like Svidrigailov, Razumikhin, and Dunya (third person, omniscient) which makes it more attention-grabbing. In Part IV, Raskolnikov is progressively sinking into his new found guilt for murdering his pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna. The latter remorse leads him to develop a physical pain that it’s too overwhelming for him to be a reliable source of other important events that still keep happening during the story. The point of view changes in this section, so that the reader is able to notice character traits, which are unable to be told if only focused on Raskolnikov; such as Razumikhin’s interpretation of his love for Dunya, Dunya’s previously unknown account on Luzhin’s marriage proposal, as well as Svidrigailov’s constant wish for contact with Raskolnikov.…

People who support the death penalty would argue that the death penalty deters people from murder because they are scared of being sentenced to death. It might scare some people, but the vast majority of murders would kill anyway, for most murders are not rationalizing their actions. Also, according to some being sentenced to life is a worse punishment than the death penalty for death would put them out of their misery. The life sentence is just as bad as a death sentence, so why have the death penalty at all? The death penalty is not beneficial. It only creates problems.…

If one tries hard enough they can research and find the statistics that will help them back their position in the ongoing debate. The fact that the debate is ongoing provides the fuel to both sides to push their agenda and hope that the undecided voters in the debate will take up their side and push the numbers up on one side that the opposite side can’t dispute and finally bring closure to the question of vengeance or deterrent, as opposed to unlawful state sanctioned murder or legal justice. Factors that are used for and against the death penalty are not always the exact opposites that one might suspect. It is not as clear as night and day, or hot and cold. Those that are in favor of the death penalty base their support on the factors that the death penalty is a deterrent to those that commit horrendous crimes such as rape, kidnapping, and the killing of a police officer. Those opposed to the death penalty point to the fact that the statics say that is not the case. They cite how states with death penalty laws do not have lower serious crime rates than states that do not have the death penalty laws. In fact, there is actually proof that their murder rate is higher. This has been thought to be supported by the fact in those death penalty states rates are higher because the person that is committing a crime feels that if they let the person live they will have to face them in court if…

Punishment is defined as the infliction of a penalty for an offense. The novel Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky took place in St. Petersburg, Russia, mid 1860s. The main character, Raskolnikov, committed the murder of a pawn broker and her sister which he became ill with guilt. He is accused as the murderer but denied it until the end where he eventually confessed and was sent to Siberia. In the novel, Raskolnikov had an unbearable amount of guilt, faced punishment by imprisonment, and gave his heart to God for forgiveness. Conflicts he was put through helped illuminate the meaning of the novel: For all crimes, there will be punishment.…
