Crime in the Bahamas
“A man died in hospital yesterday afternoon after he was allegedly shot by a store owner during an attempted armed robbery”……… “A man was found shot dead in front of a pre-school at Ethel Street, Montel Heights this morning”..... “A man was killed in a late night shooting last night. “A 23-year-old man was shot dead last night in the Lyon Road area off Shirley Street”... These are just a few of the headlines that we hear on a daily basis in The Bahamas. We as a small nation should take heed to the crime problem and try to find ways in solving them. The crime rate will continue to persist if drastic measures aren’t taken. Athena Daminos, former Tribune editor and journalist asked this question “What will it take for the government to deal with the violent crime problem that is rocking our island and the many social disorders feeding it?” in the text “What Will It Take for the Government to Deal with the Violent Crime Problem?” The questions still lingers today because the crime rate is rapidly increasing at the blink of an eye. In my opinion, there are many solutions to the crime issue. The government should simply enforce capital punishment, make the penalties for offenders more strict and train their officers better and also in a way where they can have a better relationship with the community members. Firstly, capital punishment is a topic that is always being brought up in the Bahamas. The country is currently considered abolitionist in practice, this means that they believe that it may have a harmful effect to society. With that being said, the last execution that took place in the Bahamas happened over ten years ago on January 6th 2000. I believe that anyone who is capable of taking another persons life, should undergo capital punishment. This would have a definite positive impact on the crime rate. Criminals will become aware of what the government is doing and will cease to carry out such villainous actions. Although some may see it as

I have served in the capacity of a Military Police officer in the United States Air Force with over twenty-one years of active duty service. During this time I served as patrolman, Desk Sergeant, flight chief, and the Non Commissioned Officer in charge of Police Services where I was instrumental in the implementation of our community policing program while stationed at Misawa Air Base, Japan. If I was able to give my input to the authority’s in Puerto Rico to figure out what are the causes for the high murder rate was, I would suggest to them to modernize their police force, buy new and operational equipment, hire new police officers, and train the existing force on the new technology, while implementing a community policing philosophy. I am confident if they took this approach to the problem it could help them reduce…

In the United States there is in extremely high rate of incarceration and mass imprisonment. Policies and ideas for change are being brought to the table on a daily basis. Is it worth it? Is the question that we always have to ask ourselves and will justice truly be served at the end of the day. Well throughout this course I have found that there is never a true solution to crime rates in general only ideas to decrease problems that have yet to stop rising. For example, the War on Drugs in the early 1980’s and the “broken window” policy in the mid 1970’s are both examples of putting water on the fire but never putting the fire completely out. These policy have lead us to take tremendous strides through research of every possible solution that we think would work, while also learning from our mistakes and taking more worth while routes to decrease crime and incarceration.…

Crime and violence are now a key development issue for Central American countries. In three nations El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras crime rates are among the top five in Latin America. In the regions other three countries Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama crime and violence levels are significantly lower, but a steady rise in crime rates in recent years has raised serious concern. To put the magnitude of the problem in context, the entire population of Central America is approximately the same as that of Spain, but while Spain registered 336 murders (i.e., fewer than one per day) in 2006, Central America recorded 14,257 murders (i.e., almost 40 per day) in the same year.…
