A Diamond Personality-Criminal Justice Case Study

The individual assignment is to read the Case Study, A Diamond Personality, and answer the four discussion questions that follow the Case Study. The subject of this personality case study is Oscar Rodriguez. Rodriguez is a 38-year-old entrepreneur who owns an Internet business that sells loose diamonds to various buyers. This paper will summarize the case study and then conclude by answering the personality questions. When Rodriguez moved from Puerto Rico to Gainesville, Florida, he spoke little English. After graduating from community college, he began working for a local jeweler. He didn’t know anything about jewelry but he worked hard and received Diamonds and Diamond Grading Certificate. In 1997, Rodriguez opened his own jewelry store but customers were telling him that they could find better deals on the Internet. Rodriguez recognized an opportunity and went for it. He found a dealer who agreed to provide him with some diamonds to sell on the Internet. His business grew and he was able to close his store and get out of retail. Rodriguez is now a savvy entrepreneur, and his company, Abazias.com, went public in October 2003.
What factors do you think have contributed to Rodriguez’s success? Was he merely “in the right place at the right time, “or are there characteristics about him that contribute to his success?

One reason that you can do anything if you put your mind to it is when he hits the ball over the fence when everyone was doubting him. To support this everyone in the field was calling him a jap and saying that he was no good at baseball. He made the home run after they thought he could not. This is because he got mad because everyone was calling him a jap and he wanted to prove them wrong. He usually struck out. Sometimes he got a single. But at that very moment he did what he and nobody else thought he would do which is hit a homerun. Obviously this surprised everyone including himself. This was a big accomplishment for Shorty and the rest of the team. This proves that he did what he thought was…

Oscar Rodriguez would overall score relatively good on the Big Five dimensions of personality. He seems to be quite comfortable when dealing with other people and knows what he wants and goes after it. Because of Rodriguez’s success he seems that he would score quite well in the agreeableness department. To start a business that practically does not exist, one would have to be cooperative, warm, and trusting, in order to get partners or investors. Because he has successfully built this company from ground up, one could say that he is very conscientious and is responsible, organized, dependable, and persistent. Moving to a new country, learning English, and attending a local community college suggest that Rodriguez is…

    1. After interviewing Jordan Carter it seems to me like he is very entrepreneurial and driven. It was funny giving him the test because his results had a little of each, but the most answers he had was at being a fantastic manager. After I read him the results he was very confused and shocked because I believe he thought that he was going to hear something differently even saying “what if I don’t agree with the results?” When it comes to success in the real world compared to the test I gave him, it doesn’t seem to me like it is that accurate. Jordan Carter has been having a very good time with success. His sales are sky rocketing and his team might look to expand next year. Unfortunately I do not know if using my assessment results would help him much in the business world, but I think talking about why he believes he is successful, where he sees the business going and where his goals are directed for the next year, may be a factor in making him think about new ideas to continue in a successful direction. I really enjoyed talking business with him and just seeing his goal orientated mindset play out in real life. He seems to be all about customer service and rewarding his employees which obviously plays a factor in why his business has been and will continue to expand.…
