is The State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman. On February 26th, 2012, Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman claimed it was an act of self defense. Throughout the trial, Rachel Jeantel, a friend of Martin’s who was on the phone at the time of the incident claims that Trayvon told her that a man (Zimmerman) was watching him. In the part of town they were in it was uncommon for a single black man to be alone. Zimmerman got suspicious and got out of his car and confronted Martin, then proceeded to beat the life out of him and shoot him. George Zimmerman was found not guilty of second degree murder. “They’re not saying he’s innocent, they’re saying they couldn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt, and therefore the law gave them no choice but to write ‘not guilty,” says former Los Angeles County Prosecutor, Loni Coombs. This proves that our Justice System is flawed, because they don’t know whether he’s innocent or not. They don’t know if it was just an act of self defense or if it was an act upon hatred. They are being forced to take the word of Zimmerman, because Martin isn’t alive to display his side of the case.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white women. There’s enough evidence to prove Tom’s innocence, such as, Mayella’s face was beaten up on the right side and Tom was right handed. Which means when he swung to punch her his target would be on the left side of her face. Mayella’s abusive father on the other hand was left handed. Tom was up against an all white jury and he was found guilty. This fictional example truly shows how flawed our justice system is. Due to Tom’s skin color the jury already knew they were going to call him guilty before they ever even started the trial.
One more case that proves how flawed our justice system is The Emmett Till case.
Emmett Till was a fourteen year old african american who was beaten to death for flirting with a white women. Milam and Bryant were accused of murdering him, but were found innocent. It was all white jury and during this time period if you were black and committed a crime of any sort you were at fault and it didn’t matter who you were up against. After Bryant was found innocent, he made a statement that admitted to killing Emmett. “It became clear that the injuries were too extensive for Till to survive, so they decided to put him in the Tallahatchie River.” This also proves how flawed our justice
system.
As Ben Whishaw once said, “The criminal justice system, like any system designed by human beings, clearly has its flaws.” The Justice is given just enough evidence to create a case. From that point on, they are required to make a claim and decided if that person is found guilty or not. Despite the hard work and dedication of the members, The justice System is still flawed.
