How do they interact with one another? Explain how each of these pieces of the system work to complement the others. This example is one of many ways for a person to enter the criminal justice system. Once a crime is committed, if
reported the law enforcement branch will investigate, collect evidence and make an arrest, after the arrest takes place the subject is booked. The prosecutor’s office chooses whether they accept the case, if the case is accepted, charges are filed. The case will be overseen by an appointed judge and court reporters, all parties will submit documents pertaining to the case. If Charges are dropped the subject exits the criminal justice system. If the subject is charged the courts will move forward with preliminary steps, the adjudication proceeding. After all the preliminary steps, have taken place the correction branch steps in. “The subject is now convicted and is transferred to a correctional authority to carry out the sanction” (Fagin 10).
What would happen if one branch of the system were broken? Describe how the malfunction of one criminal justice system branch would affect the operation of the other two branches. I believe if one branch in the system is broken the system would not function properly. Example of police corruption, if the law enforcement department is planting evidence, on individuals to obtain an arrest eventually the prosecutors will find out the truth and cases will be thrown out. This will be a waste of taxpayer’s money and the police department will have a bad reputation and could face criminal charges of their own.
