MEDIA ASSIGNMENT #2

Sunday, April 27th, 2014 I watched the CNBC & CBS News channels where the news regarding the Crisis in Ukraine and sending more U.S Troops to Eastern Europe were presented. I focused on Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby where he said that the exercises and training will last about a month, and initially involve about 600 troops to be send to Ukraine.

The United States will send about 600 U.S. troops to Poland and the three Baltic states to take part in exercises in the coming days to reassure NATO allies following Russia's seizure of the Crimean region from Ukraine, the Pentagon press secretary Kirby said on Sunday. Admiral John Kirby, a top Defense Department spokesman, said the bilateral exercises planned for Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were in addition to the regular training schedule the U.S. military has with those countries and were added due to the events in Ukraine and will last about a month.

"The United States takes seriously our obligations under Article 5 of the NATO alliance, even though these aren't NATO exercises,'' Kirby said "It's a very tangible representation of our commitment to our security obligations in Europe."

Earlier on Monday, Ukraine's acting president called for an anti-terrorist operation to be re-launched in the east of the country after the body of a local politician from his own party was found showing signs of torture.
Ukraine's security forces had largely suspended what was a fairly limited operation to respond to the takeover of eastern town by pro-Russian separatists after an accord with Moscow last week to try to defuse the crisis.

In 2014, during Conservative Stephen Harper’s term, the Canadian government sent only 69 special forces trainers to Iraq in order to train the Kurdish forces and the Iraqi military. It was blatantly obvious on the world stage that Canada was putting in less than they could have. Recently, Justin Trudeau announced his decision to send more ground troops to Iraq. The government never gave an exact figure but cited the Forces Afghanistan training mission to which the Canadian government committed…

Equally vital is that Canada continues to invest in overseas training opportunities with NATO and other allies. This kind of training can be expensive and therefore hard to rationalize, but it is the foundation for cooperation in times of need; a foundation that is painfully difficult to build in the throes of a crisis. For Canada, interoperability and the ability to work in the closest harmony with likeminded nations will remain amongst its highest goals and a…

    1. In President Obama’s speech at West Point, he announced that 30,000 additional troops would be sent to Afghanistan. He made this decision because he said it was vital to the United States’ national interest. The vital national interest at risk in President Obama’s address is the security and safety of the American people as well as the “security of our allies and the common security of the world.” By involving the military and increasing the troop strength, President Obama can achieve the objectives of his strategy. His objectives are to keep the Taliban from becoming powerful, prevent them from government rule, improve Afghanistan security forces and government so they can manage their own country and prevent Al Qaeda from establishing refuge in other countries. If you follow the framework of several important U.S. documents, such as the National Defense Strategy (NDS) and Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) they will outline this same strategy. The National Defense Strategy states that it is the responsibility of the military to protect ourselves and our allies from attack. It states that the military should help protect and secure our vital interests abroad. U.S. security is linked with the security of the international community. The physical integrity of our country is protected by the military through multiple security controls. One of these security controls is through deployments of the armed forces. The Quadrennial Defense Review states the mission of the U.S. military is to protect the American people and advance our nation’s interests. The vital interests of the United States are intertwined with the integrity and resilience of allies abroad. Our vital interests are security, prosperity, broad respect for universal values and an international order that promotes cooperation among our allies. The President’s vision is to become more powerful domestically while bringing together all elements of national power. We need to help our neighbors…

The NMS serves to focus the Armed Forces on maintaining US leadership in a global community that is challenged on many fronts – from countering the threat of global terrorism to fostering emerging democracies. In this environment, US presence and commitment to partners are essential. Our Armed Forces, operating at home and abroad, in peace and war, will continue to serve as a constant, visible reminder of the United States role to protect common interests. "Our dedication to security and stability ensures that the United States is viewed as an indispensable partner, encouraging other nations to join us in helping make the world not just safer, but…

Not surprisingly, the most significant break between the document and the president was on Russia. The NSS speaks of Russia as a threatening adversary that must be countered. Additionally, the doctrine calls out Russia for interfering in other countries' politics through "modernized forms of subversive tactics." But Trump denies Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and always seem to praise Vladimir Putin. Trump's NSS honored international institutions by stating that "American political, business, and military leaders worked together with their counterparts in Europe and Asia to shape the post-war order through the United Nations, the Marshall Plan, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and other institutions designed to advance our shared interests of security, freedom, and peace." Trump, by contrast, perpetually denigrates the NATO, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations. On December 9, in Pensacola, he sideswiped NATO allies and inappropriately proposed that the United States may not protect them unless they "send a little of that cash flow our way." The NSS says: "Diplomacy is indispensable to identify and implement solutions to conflicts in unstable regions of the world short of military involvement." And yet, Trump plans to cut a significant portion of the State Department budget. Another passage of the draft reads "For generations, our society has protected free-press, free-speech, and free-thought … no external threat must be allowed to shake the commitment of Americans to their values, undermine our system of government, or divide the nation." Trump's near-daily attacks on the press don't support free-press, free-speech, and free-thoughts. Additionally, the doctrine reminds of the need to prevent and protect against…

In 1985, the United States and the Soviet Union relations were coming to a new balance of power when the Soviet Union collapsed into independent nation’s beginning early in 1985. After years of Soviet military build-up at the expense of domestic development; economic growth was at a standstill. The United States was flourishing from an economic boast in a growth and strengthening of military power to bring the United States into a new leap in technological advancement over the Soviet’s. In Ronald Reagan’s second inaugural speech, he states in paragraph 30 that “One nation, the Soviet Union, has conducted the greatest military buildup in the history of man, building arsenals of awesome offensive weapons.” In this statement, Ronald Reagan knew that he had to direct the United States’ Military in a direction that would equal or surpass the strength of the Soviet military and any future threat to this nation that would come. The balance of power here between both super powers of the time was to build the military might as much as possible all in only to avoid the use of the last resort of a weapon that would be to come to a nuclear war.…

The year of 2014 has proven to be that no president gets a free pass when it comes to difficult international decisions. Over the last term and a half, the Obama administration really has been picking up the disruptions of the Middle East right where Bush left them while simultaneously being dealt with more issues of diplomacy. The occurrences involving Ukraine and Syria have, in opinion, shown the current administrations true colors. It is the prime example of the realism ideology and the contrast between “hard” and “soft” power. In both situations, Obama has shown great reluctance in putting to use the American military. Although tens of thousands Syrians have been murdered and Ukraine has been under direct attack from Russia, present administration has moved from the “hard power” that killed Osama bin Laden and essentially ended the war in Iraq to a potential isolationist. However, as some could argue, like Stephan M. Walt, “foreign policy is not philanthropy.” Unless allies have direct benefits for the United States, perhaps the nation has no business jumping to the rescue (Walt). In other words, America is once again bringing focus back to the home front and has the potential of taking a more realist approach to foreign policy than ever before. If the nation truly does not want to look out for the interest of fellow democratic states simply because it…

Europe has been militarily weak since World War II, but it remained unnoticed because of the unique geopolitical context of the Cold War: it was the strategic pivot between the United States and the Soviet Union. With the "new Europe", in 1990s, everybody agreed that Europe will restore its power. However, the Balkan conflict revealed the European military incapability. The United States carried out the decisive phases of a military mission and led to a stable situation. This isn't a surprise when we know that average…
