KELP SUSHI JOINT
OWNER IS ARRESTED, JOINT IS CLOSED
So what do you do when you have only been open for less than a year and suddenly the owner is arrested? Competition for sushi customers in Tampa is very competitive. With the number of restaurants devoted to sushi as well as the number of restaurants that offer sushi in addition to their other menu, owners of sushi restaurants need to be on top of their game. In September 2013, Wesley Chiu decided to venture away from his parents' business and open up his own sushi restaurant, called KELP Sushi Joint.
Wesley grew up in the restaurant business, his parents owned many Asian restaurants including their most recent, Origami Sushi. This upbringing gave him a lot of insight and experience in regards to what customers wanted. So after completing a marketing degree at University of Florida, Wesley returned to Tampa to open his vision of fast, casual sushi. From the beginning Wesley saw that he underestimated the neighborhood of Palma Ceia and quickly had to refocus his concept of "fast". He was able to transform the restaurant into a sit-down atmosphere. In addition, Wesley looked to various internet outlets to promote his restaurant.
