A Midwife’s Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard Q: Who was Martha Ballard, when and where did she live? Q: Explain the numerous roles of a midwife in colonial/early American society. A: Midwives did help in the birthing process, but they also did much more than this. They “mediated the mysteries of birth, procreation, illness, and death. They touched the untouchable, handled excrement and vomit as well as milk, swaddled the dead as well as the newborn. They brewed medicines from plants and roots, and presided over neighborhood gatherings of women” (47). Literal roles in addition to aiding in birth involved making medical products such as salves and pills, caring for wounds and burns, and treating diseases such as measles, colic, whooping cough, and…
Donald L. Niewyk’s fifth and sixth chapters both deal more with outside perspectives and outside reactions than it does with those who were persecuted. The fifth chapter, “Bystander Reactions,” offers four different arguments as to why bystanders acted they way they did during the Holocaust. The sixth chapter, “Possibilities of Rescue,” discusses three different viewpoints on what foreign governments could have done to prevent the Holocaust. These two chapters conclude Niewyk’s book The Holocaust and wrap up the final sequence of events surrounding the Holocaust and the camps.…

Author’s use many literary elements to develop the central idea. In Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi, Crispin must conquer a quest to find his true self. Throughout the historical novel, Avi uses conflict to support the idea that sometimes you must lose everything to gain self worth. In the beginning of the book, Crispin must face the challenges society has put forth. For example, in a town where your fathers ranking, gave you your worth in society, Crispin was nearly a “nobody.” Crispin had no knowledge of his heritage, resulting him to be called “Asta’s son” and being seen as an irrelevant individual. Due to the way others viewed him, Crispin began to believe and carry himself with no self worth or confidence. However, once Crispin is…
Despite the conflicting public opinion, Chris McCandless succeeded in his goal to survive in the wilderness and taught the world valuable lessons in the process. Chris McCandless “probably died on August 18th, 112 days after he had walked into the wild.” (119, Krakauer) He survived with very little gear and food, even though he was essentially cut off from the world. To have lived for a little over three months totally self-sufficient is impressive. Chris’s goal was to be independent and live off the land for a while. In his mindset, he achieved in his goal. Wayne Westerberg had employed Chris for two short amounts of time, but said “He was the type of person who insisted on living out his beliefs.” (Krakauer, 67) This was why Chris was determined to go to Alaska, instead of listening to the protests of others.…

I realize that it is opposite of the manner in which this school had begun, but it seems as though we have little choice. We already have a faculty unit that is looking to form a union due to the budget crisis, we should probably consider coming back to them with a better long-term plan in place.…

Opening doors of hopes and dreams for thousands of people, the discovery of the New World rapidly broadened the minute and stubborn perspective of the world people once knew. Promising of wealth, new lives and freedom, many sold their life to servitude for a taste of America. But instead of wealth, they found debt. Instead of a new life, they found death. Instead of freedom, they found the endless cycle of poverty. Although few made gains, many, like Richard Frethorne, were left impoverish and destitute. Frethorne’s letter supported Hofstadter’s adverse views on indentured servitude in three main criteria: the disappointment of the New World, the inescapably torturous life of an indentured servant, and the countless deaths that diffused throughout the journey.…
William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury tells of a crumbling southern family, the Compsons, through the inner thoughts of three brothers and a third person narrator. Each of the three sections gives a different perspective on their sister, Caddy, who is the main cause of the turmoil in the family. The brother’s, Benjy, Quentin, and Jason, each interpret Caddy differently based on each of their interior conflicts. Benjy’s section gives the reader the perspective of the Caddy from a simple minded perspective, and describes Caddy as such. Quentin, being highly educated, gives a deeper look into Caddy and how she leads the family, and Quentin, to their end. Jason views Caddy as a disappointment and a curse upon the family. In Jason’s interpretation…
On August 9, 2014 Michael Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. This event led to protests that lasted for weeks to fight for Michael Brown’s rights along with African American rights. The police officer, Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Brown was declared not indicted by a judge which caused even more anger in Ferguson. Many people showed their anger by setting several buildings and businesses on fire. I believe that different police policies, training, or administration could have prevented the events in Ferguson, Missouri.…
Coming up on the ASAA Track and Field championships, I developed achilles tendonitis which inevitably ruined my high school running career. I couldn’t believe that me of all people had gotten injured. I was very involved with injury prevention and performed strengthening exercises, stretches, made safe decisions, and had very a very healthy diet on a daily basis. Over the next eighteen months I visited over six different experts who claimed that they recognized my injury and knew how to treat it. After nearly three months without any noticeable improvement I began to conduct my own research and try to correct my problem myself. I developed a keen interest in the field of rehabilitation and the many mysteries that the body held. When the time…
After reading 'The Crucible ', many questions popped into my mind. One of the most thought provoking question is "What was the life like in Salem of 1692 as represented in 'The Crucible '?" I have researched many sources and will present my answer in the following paragraphs.…
The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures; however, it does not guarantee against all searches and seizures if there is reasonable doubt. Searches are determined on two important interests. The first is the intrusion on the individual’s Fourth Amendment Rights; the second includes legitimate government interests such as national security. What constitutes a reasonable suspicion? Where must a public official draw the line? How should one address any “gray area” that might arise?…
