St. Thomas Aquinas once said, “It is not theft, properly speaking, to take secretly and use another's property in a case of extreme need: because that which he takes for the support of his life becomes his own property by reason of that need.” This quotation is really applicable to the life of the life main character who is Jean Valjean. Though stealing is an erroneous act but he extremely needs it and by this reason he may be free from sin. Remember he was sent to imprisonment for stealing bread and spent more years there for attempting to escape. He stole bread to feed the hungry stomach of his sisters. Though what he did is opposing with the laws but it is not opposing with his conscience. He followed his conscience than the law. Law is created by men while conscience is a gift from God. When he was released after 19 years he stayed in the shelter of a bishop after being driven off by every town upon knowing that he was an ex-convict. Because of eagerness to be rich he tried to steal the silver spoon of bishop but the authority caught him. Luckily the bishop saved him then gives him even more. What he did is not accordance to the law or conscience. The bishop helped him but in return he stole the silver spoon. After receiving good he should also counter a good thing. But we can’t judge him by this one mistake. He had experience too much discomfort that is why when he see opportunity he instantly grab it. And this new opportunity started his new life. After 8 years he became a mayor and owned a factory. In his a woman named Fantine was discovered sending money to her illegitimate child. Since her doing was contrary to the law she was fired. She became a prostitute and suffered physical abuse. Jean Valjean who was the owner of the factory helped her. His conscience enables him to assume responsibility as the owner of the said factory. He heartedly helped the woman as he know how to feel when you have nothing.
