Daryl Cagle’s cartoon “High School Prepares for Jobs”, depicts a job interviewer asking a recently graduated high school student, “So, how has high school prepared you for this job?”. Cagle wants readers to ponder if high school students are actually prepared to take on the responsibilities of a job straight out of high school. Teen Dystopia by Sophie Boyer is an opinionated piece that explains the reason we are so attracted to novels such as The Hunger Games. A reason such a novel is so appealing is because of the action packed plot and powerful symbolism weaved throughout. A story set in future North America, where climate change has destroyed society is where teenagers participate in a gruesome fight to the death called the Hunger Games. That heady combination results to complex yet relatable characters and most of all, a meaningful story. Hence, that is the reason why Boyer regards The Hunger Games as a “well-constructed allegory that also reflects a more realistic portrayal of our world .” Personally, I also admire authors who can create an abstract world so flawlessly that they still remain relatable. Even though The Hunger Games takes place in a different time period; where the world is overly violent, it leads to a new social awareness. As Boyer pointed out, “this awareness leads to a more tragic understanding of the world, but never without the hope of a better future.” When I read The Hunger Games it felt like it was situated in a world so seemingly different from ours, that I didn’t realise until the end, that it is based on a bit of reality. The Hunger Games highlights social issues of poverty, devaluing human life, and classism to make us aware that it still exists in the world, our world. Overall, The Hunger Games is a book that reveals the depressing reality of some places in the world, yet Boyer and I believe that The Hunger Games sends a good message to us readers: to live life to the fullest and never take life for granted.…
“The Perpetual Adolescent” is an observational piece by Joseph Epstein. He suggests that modern adult acts much more childish than the previous generations of middle aged people. A big part of acting like a younger person is dressing like a younger person. According to Epstein, the dressed down adult is the immature adult, which in turn leads to many adults trying to copy the modern and hip youth culture. This in turn created more relaxed environments across all career fields, leaving less “true” adults. He feels that American now want to stay young forever instead of maturing into the adults of their parent's generations. Justin Pope argues, in a Remediation Nation article, that even with a high school diploma, students find themselves unprepared for college’s academic challenges. He states that it is a tough lesson to learn the hard way “through experience” for many students now arriving on campus. To support his suggestion he includes a study that one in three students entering college have to enroll in remedial courses in order to continue with their level of education. Another point Pope makes is that of recently enrolled student, Christina Jeronimo; she said that she wishes that there exists a gap between the demands from college work to high school work, that sometimes high school instructors baby their students. In my experience I cannot agree nor disagree because I have not yet made it to a college level school; however, I agree with this author because it seems to be a great issue for both educators and students to have to first prepare themselves after high school. I also agree because I would not appreciate finding myself having to spend money on remedial classes after high school. One of the points that made me reconsider my opinion on this topic was a comment on Jeronimo that she wishes she would have tried a little harder in high school. Another point of reconsideration was that on average remedial classes run to $2,000 at community colleges and $2,500 at universities. Last point for reconsideration is that students fall behind in their life plans and find themselves stuck financially. “The bill to colleges and taxpayers for trying to bring them up to speed on material they were supposed to learn in high school comes to between $2.3 billion and $2.9 billion annually.” And “These students come out of high school really misled. They think they're prepared. They got a 3.0 and got through the curriculum they needed to get admitted, but they find what they learned wasn't adequate.” Are good quotes that I would use in my essay.
