Artifact: Critical Analysis Essay
Course: ED 294: Introduction to Multicultural Education
The Critical Analysis Essay from my Introduction to Multicultural Education class at Leeward Community College provides evidence that I have completed the HTSB Standard 04: Content Knowledge. This essay called for me to analyze the article “Pidgin and Education: A position paper,” by Da Pidgin Coup. The assignment was split into three parts: interpretation, reflection, and practical application. For the interpretation section, I was to cite and interpret a quote from the article. I needed to ascertain the argument being made. For the second section, I needed to give my thoughts and stance on the information presented in the article. For the third section, I elaborated on how I would use the information and concepts presented in the article in my own teaching. The quote I chose to use was where the author pointed out that if children’s first language is Pidgin, they will better understand the content that is being taught in …show more content…
class if they are allowed to use Pidgin. I wrote that I agree that using some Pidgin in class is beneficial. Students’ brains will be better able to process information if it is being presented in a language they are used to. However, I also wrote teacher should limit the amount of Pidgin used in classrooms. Standardized English should be used for formal work, as it is generally more accepted in the world. In summary, teachers must find a balance between Pidgin and English. I chose this artifact to fulfill Standard 04: Content Knowledge because it demonstrates that “the teacher knows and uses the academic language of the discipline and knows how to make it accessible to learners.
(4l).” In my paper, I mentioned that it is vital to ensure that learners in the class all have an equal chance to succeed. For some students, that means using Pidgin, as it is the only language they are familiar with. For others, particularly English Language Learners, and students who come from the mainland United States, using Standardized English would likely be better. Through doing this assignment, and learning more about Pidgin, I came to respect the language more, and see that it does have a place in the classroom. I do not plan to teach in Hawaii, at least not for an extended amount of time, but the concept stands. Teachers must make content accessible to all learners, whether that is through using Pidgin, or something
else.
