Fast Food Issue
Fast food has become a popular form of a meal for many people in our nation. It is thought to be the quickest and easiest method of eating. I have noticed in many people that it is a typical daily routine to pick up a drive thru fast food meal. Obesity in America has become a very common sight on daily news. Fast food is a main factor as to why America is the most obese country in the world. One out of every four United States citizens eats fast food once a day (Fast Food Statistics in United States of America Sweet Additions). According to a recent study, Americans now spend more money on fast food than anything else. Fast food is stepping in as leading causes for obesity, rare times for family dinners, and is a huge money making industry (Schlosser).
The fast food industries have the American people hooked on spending their money for food. Eric Schlosser stated, “In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion. Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars” (Schlosser). This statistic is something as Americans we should not be proud of one bit. What ever happened to the good ole fashioned home cooked meals straight from the farms? Instead the nation is leaning on greasy, fatty, sugar loaded processed food. Those who eat this unhealthy fast food on a regular basis are at higher risk for multiple health problems. Beef and poultry used in fast food are now produced in ways that I have found to be very shocking. The average percentage of actual beef in a fast food burger is 14.8 percent. Some chains use up to as little of 2 percent of real beef! The rest is made up of water, many different types of body parts and tissues, and flavoring (Benson).
Those who eat fast food on a regular basis do not even think about what they are doing to themselves. Parents
