Critical Analysis "The School of Athens" High Renaissance: Italian (Florentine) "The School of Athens". 1509-11. Wall fresco. Signature room, The Vatican, Rome: Raphael.
In this painting, you see around 60 Greek philosophers arranged in a very large hall. The philosophers are talking to each other, discussing theories or mathematical queries. It symbolizes philosophic thinking and the search for truth. On the wall you can see paintings and statues. He has used contour lines with domes and actual line with figures. Personalities are arranged like actors in a tired architectural setting, Raphael has represented distinguished Greek philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle (the central figures) Socrates and Euclid. Composition has been ordered brilliantly, clearly revealing his outstanding ability. The placing of each figure and each group combine to produce perfect harmony, order and balance, and, even though some sixty figures are used in the composition, there is no crowding. Therefore painting is asymmetrical. The main focal point of the painting is on Plato and Aristotle. The painting has more emphasis on these two philosophers than the others because they are centered in the middle of the composition and they are the only two standing in front of hall entrance with sky surrounding them.

Raphael has demonstrated tone in this painting. An example of this is were the light beaming through the windows and creating darkness on the ceiling of the domes. This gives the painting a three-dimensional effect. Also demonstrates line and a range of different colors but mostly primary and secondary, matching perfectly to each figure and object.

The themes he is exploring are philosophic thinking buy Greek Philosophers, who are expressing their theories and beliefs to one another. What this work means to me is, that Raphael had great respect for the Greek scholars and philosophers and admired there teaching and beliefs.

The intention on the artist was to express social views as it looks as if the scholars are socialising to one another and sharing their thinkings. This could also come under a political interpretation as they might be expressing

    What first catches the viewer 's eyes are the vivid colors used in the painting. Ultimately what jumps out the most is the man on the right 's red robe. The artist intended this for a reason, discussed later. The room where the men are standing is front lit. Also the atmosphere is not hazy. There is no hint of sffumato. It is very much unlike the Romantic works produced earlier in the century. Rather the edges of the figures and of other objects in the picture plane are clearly defined. The artist "renders every object in the painting with meticulous clarity" (Smith 1). To see this work in person is really quite impressive. The painter has achieved a great sense of depth in the painting, as well as a strikingly realistic quality. The picture taken for this paper from the Albright-Knox 's web page simply does not do this work justice. One 's experience of standing in front of this painting is that of awe. The artist has depicted everything in the scene so realistically, and yet has made it look better than it probably did in real life. Everything in the painting has a rich, glowing quality about it.…

    A fresco is done on plaster, on walls or ceilings; somewhat like a mural painting. The original name of this fresco is actually Causarum Cognitio (Knowledge of Causes) but it‘s called School of Athens, which came from a 17th century guidebook. The School of Athens was painted by Raphael Sanzio (or Raffaelo Santi), who was 27 years old at the time, for Pope Julius II between 1510 and 1511. The pope was so enthusiastic when he saw the fresco that Raphael received the go-ahead to paint the entire papal suite. The Stanza della Segnatura was to be Julius' library, which would have a small collection of books intended for his personal use stored in it. The fresco of Raphael's School of Athens is a masterpiece of art. However, we do not know all the identities of the persons who are depicted. Giorgio Vasari and others have suggested that nearly all Greek philosophers and ancient scientists can be found in the painting.     During this time pieces of artworks were being produced at a strong rate. This was due that artists were gaining recognition over large areas. This new fondness of artwork that contained humanistic influences were new, and people were amazed by the style that had not been seen before in their lifetime. A large proportion of the artwork that was being made was made for the church and popes. One such artwork was the school of Athens, created by Raphael Sanzio, for the Apostolic Palace, in Vatican City. This work is of a grand scale in that was commonly taken on by the artists of the time. This particular fresco is 16’’5’ by 23’’ 3’ and is one of Raphael’s more famous works. Just by looking at this fresco you can see the strong influence of humanism. The theme itself is a strong give away, for it has a landscape full of philosophers from ancient times. As the lines of the fresco draw your eye the center of the landscape, you see two of the giants of ancient Greek philosophy Aristotle and Plato. One of the reasons that your eye is drawn toward the center of the painting is because Raphael was able to use the concept of using a vanishing point to make this 2d painting 3d.     there 's a nearly flawless symmetry between the left and right sides; the archways and receding columns are such mirror images that it makes one wonder at how they achieved this on such a large scale in their time. Further creating a balance, Raphael nearly evenly divided the people between each side of the painting - there are 29 on the left side of the center line, and 28 are scattered on the right. There also seems to be a balance between top and bottom, as the open archways become smaller and narrower as they recede towards the center, so is there a somewhat clear area in the foreground that narrows as it nears the two subjects at the center point. Looking from them through the rest of the crowd, I notice a large amount of variety in the types of clothes the people are wearing, but more at the variety of colors on display. No two garments are shaded the same, and a quick glance over the crowd provides a whirlwind of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Despite the contrast, this does provide a sense of unity to the image, making the individuals and groups all seem as one whole, even though they are spread across the image.
