Critical Lens
L.M. Montgomery once said “We pay a price for everything we get or take in this world.” I think his idea of this is right. In order for you to accomplish what you want, there will be consequences and you need to get through it. I agree with this quote because it doesn't matter what you want to accomplish there will always be an outcome whether it’s good or bad. There are a lot of books that relate to this quote. One of them being, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and another called The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. Both Of Mice and Men and The Miracle Worker relate to this quote because they both experience and undergo situations and display actions that lead them to pay a price whether they caused it on themselves or not. The critical lens relates to Of Mice and Men because George takes the risks of having Lennie around. Lennie was mentally retarded, he doesn't comprehend or know what he does half the time. George had more responsibility of taking care of Lennie and keeping him safe. Back when George and Lennie were in a town, Lennie went under a girls skirt not to harm her. He just likes to pet soft things and he was unaware that it was a girl’s skirt. The girl exaggerated and yelled out “rape.” They were chased out of town by farmers who were angry. George has to find a place to sleep and get a job for the both of them. At the ranch he finds, that’s where there’s more trouble and not what he expected. There are a lot of literary elements that are in this book. One example of a literary element would be conflict. Lennie caused a great amount of problems for George. Sometimes he doesn't even realize what he’s supposed to be doing. He has a disability which puts him at a disadvantage. For example, he broke Curley’s hand by accident but Curley was picking on him and wanted to fight him. Then, because Curley’s wife didn't listen to Lennie, saying he shouldn't talk to her but she pointed out that she had soft hair and she didn't know that Lennie likes to feel

An anonymous source once stated, “When fighting the Dragon, be fearful of becoming the Dragon itself”. This quote means that one’s trepidation of becoming or saying things that one’s contrary to. This quote is true because often times contradiction and hysteria can occur which leads to a change in opinion. The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer equally prove this quote to be true through the use of literary elements or techniques. Characterization and conflict are used in the two works of literature to benefit to prove this quote accurate.…

Fiction is an attempt to tell the truth about things we generally lie about. I agree because authors write books that tell every thing like it is and that it seems right but is very wrong, and they tell it with out censorship and make readers think is that the way friends, family , and strangers think too because I can’t read their minds?…

In the book, “Strength to Love”, Martin Luther King Jr. said “ The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” In other words, a person’s character is defined by how they respond at a time of despair, hurt, and struggle and not how a person acts and what they stand for at a time of peacefulness and luxury. Both, “Fences” by August Wilson and “The Color of Water” by James McBride illustrate the truth of this quote using characterization and conflict.…

According to Seneca, a Roman philosopher, “The bravest sight in the world is to see a great man struggling against adversity.” In other words, the boldest thing in this world is to see an honorable person fighting against misfortune, and never give up. I agree with this statement because it happens in real life and in literature. A man who goes against tragedy caused by nature, human or himself is considered great and honorable. Two works of literature that illustrate the quote as I have explained it are Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and Night by Elie Wiesel.…

Communication is a fundamental part of working in a professional environment. Without proper communication, nothing will get done. Outside the Lens is a very collaborative and communicative company as is the work the students the students do at Muirlands, so I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to have good communication and understanding. It’s also important to self-advocate for yourself otherwise you won’t accomplish anything you want. My mentor has always left room for self-advocacy by telling me to let him know if there was anything specific I wanted to learn, or focus on. I’ve felt confident enough to speak up whenever there’s something I want and that’s helped me out while working on my project. While editing I decided I needed more…

In most cases evil wins the battle but never wins the war. The quote “In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers." This has been proven as valid, in both books Macbeth and in Black & White. In Macbeth, Macbeth kills the king however he gets killed. In Black & White both boys steel to pay their senior dues. They are both punished according to their racial ethnicity. This is proven as valid in Black & White when the boy of African decent was automatically blamed for the crime. They’re for, learning their lessons. If you do not learn the lessons on your own, life will teach them to you the hard way.…

J.F. Clarke once said, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” I think that what Clarke meant is that people who listen to their heart, people who do what they know or believe to be right, even if everyone else is or would be against them for it, are the bravest people of all. I agree with this quote because it’s usually hard to do the right thing, especially if one has no support. Two books that show this are Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Lightning by Dean Koontz.…

This article, “The RU-486 Abortion Pill Should Be Available to Women”, was written by Laura Fraser in 2001 for the Greenhaven Press. The issue involved with this article is whether or not the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S.. The conclusion Fraser came up with was yes, the RU-486 abortion pill should be available to women in the U.S., and for plenty of reasons. For example, if mifepristone becomes available, it will remove political and practical barriers so women can get abortions and physicians will not have to perform complete abortions. Also, 54% of all…

This essay will focus on an incident that I have reflected on in my previous critical reflection. I shall use this as the basis for this essay and expand on and explore the issues that arise from the topics uncovered. During the break of a lecture on genograms, I was prompted to give input regarding a conversation that had arisen between two of my peers, upon hesitating I was quizzed by the one of them: "Why are you always so quiet . . . ". As soon as I heard this, I was reminded of my family, memories of my childhood were brought up and after getting out of the conversation I was immersed in this line of thought for the rest of lecture. I slipped into an all too familiar thought pattern that would sometimes lead to daydreaming, but on this occasion it lead to self-pity.…

Stereotyping is a prevalent practice in our society today. While many claim not to cast judgment onto to others, the majority of people whether they admit it not, hold many stereotypes about others. Whether we see it on the television, in magazines, or in the news, stereotyping is an important part of our lives. The purpose of this paper is to identify the different stereotypes regarding women that I have observed and what I would do to change these stereotypes through the study of psychology.…

In the portfolio we were told that we had to pose a problem with adult education. My instructor told us about the portfolio during the first week of class and we spent several weeks preparing for the portfolio. She helped us to develop our critical and rhetorical analysis skills which would be a big part of the portfolio, especially the use of critical analysis. When it was time to begin to write our papers, we, as a class, came up with a big long list of topics that would be good for the portfolio. We came up with topics on our own and as we said them, our instructor typed them up on a word document. I had a few different topics at the beginning but, I narrowed it down to one, which was, the student focus on grades. As I began to write my paper I realized that my topic was a little too vague. Then I changed my topic to how students tend to focus on their grades instead of learning the knowledge in a way that would benefit them. I chose this issue because it is something that has affected me when I was in high school and followed me to college. I have always been someone that school came easy until I reached the college level, because I had to learn how to learn by myself, without a teacher telling me what I need to know for the test. I used my personal experience in school as my intro, because I thought it would make my audience connect to what I had to say and give them a little bit of an understanding about my learning process. One of the hardest parts of this paper was using language that would satisfy an academic audience, because I have never really used academic language in my writings.…
