The author uses Corinne’s thoughts to support the message. An example of this can be found on page 2 where Corinne thought “but her new eyes will not be brown, and they will not shine with her laughter”. Corinne believed that the grey mechanical eyes simply couldn’t compare to her friend Grusha’s real eyes that “hold you when you look into them”. Another example is the use of personifications in the story. Corrine described Grusha’s eyes as eyes that danced, flashed and shined; just as how she would describe living, breathing people. This emphasizes how the eyes contribute to the individuality and beauty of a person, and the fact that nothing can replace them.…
The Bluest Eye is a novel by Toni Morrison that takes place at the end of the Great Depression in Ohio. In the novel, the MacTeer family first takes in a young boarder named Pecola Breedlove after her father Cholly has attempted to burn down the family home, but she is soon reunited with her own family despite their hardships. The MacTeer family are essential to the novel because one of the young daughters, Frieda, seems to suffer from a much less severe racism than most other characters, going as far as to destroy a white doll she is given. Cholly drinks, and Cholly and Pecola’s mother Pauline are physically abusive towards each other, leading her brother Sammy to run away from the home.…

Beauty standards set by society for black women fuels into their insecurities and drives them towards self-hatred. From the start, Pecola’s community, classmates, teachers and parent’s drill into her head that she is unattractive. Pecola Breedlove comes to admit she is ugly as she starts obsessing over the idea of having the bluest eyes to make her attractive. Pecola full-heartedly believes that blue eyes are a necessity for beauty and if she were to by some means acquire them, all of her problems in life would disappear. “Why, look at pretty-eyed Pecola. We mustn't do bad things in front of those pretty eyes” (46). Pecola assumes blue eyes are the key to gaining admiration from her community and love from her family. While Pecola Breedlove is constantly reminded of everything she is: ugly, poor, and black; her innocence is also stolen from her as she is figuratively raped by society and literally raped by her father.…

L.M. Montgomery once said “We pay a price for everything we get or take in this world.” I think his idea of this is right. In order for you to accomplish what you want, there will be consequences and you need to get through it. I agree with this quote because it doesn't matter what you want to accomplish there will always be an outcome whether it’s good or bad. There are a lot of books that relate to this quote. One of them being, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and another called The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. Both Of Mice and Men and The Miracle Worker relate to this quote because they both experience and undergo situations and display actions that lead them to pay a price whether they caused it on themselves or not.…
In most cases evil wins the battle but never wins the war. The quote “In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers." This has been proven as valid, in both books Macbeth and in Black & White. In Macbeth, Macbeth kills the king however he gets killed. In Black & White both boys steel to pay their senior dues. They are both punished according to their racial ethnicity. This is proven as valid in Black & White when the boy of African decent was automatically blamed for the crime. They’re for, learning their lessons. If you do not learn the lessons on your own, life will teach them to you the hard way.…
J.F. Clarke once stated, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” To me, this statement means that any individual who follows their conscience, and what they find to be right or wrong, is most brave, or strong, because they step away from society’s opinion and go with their own feelings whether it be what they need or desire. I agree with this statement because I also feel that an individual who listens to their conscience shows bravery. In my opinion someone who follows their conscience rather than society’s standards shows a lot of strength. It takes a lot of character for a person to leave their comfort zone to do the right thing, especially when that person has no support. Two literary works that support my opinion are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In both of these literary works the protagonists are faced with life altering decisions where they must make choices and differentiate right from wrong while having no support from other characters.…
Restatement of thesis: In the end, we can see that Kafka’s point should be believed; the mariner’s suffering proved that art can change how we view nature and the wedding guest himself showed an example of how stories change…
Fyodor Dostrevsky said, “Fear is simply the consequence of every lie.” This quote means that you aren’t afraid of the action you made but you’re scared of the action that are going to be made toward you as a punishment. This quote agreeable because a lot of the time when a person lies there thinking right then an there, the fear of what’s going to happen to you when the truth comes out is what punishes you the most not the actual consequence it’s self. Fyodor Dostrevskys quote is evident in All-night Part by R.L.Stine and The Crucible by Arthur Miller because in each wok of literature they all have to face the consequences of lying and the fear of their punishment.…
Anne Lamott said, “Good literature substitutes for an experience which we have not ourselves lived through.” Good literature allows individuals to live through events which they have not encountered in their lives. I agree with this quote because I believe it is true. This quote is shown to be true through the books, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In both pieces of literature, characters had an experience which we haven’t had or been through. Books help us understand the situations that we haven’t faced yet.…
J.F. Clarke once said, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” I think that what Clarke meant is that people who listen to their heart, people who do what they know or believe to be right, even if everyone else is or would be against them for it, are the bravest people of all. I agree with this quote because it’s usually hard to do the right thing, especially if one has no support. Two books that show this are Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and Lightning by Dean Koontz.…
A critical lens is an approach or viewpoint of a text based upon a critical theory or knowledge. To view a text through the critical lens of Feminism, for example, is to examine the text from the point of view of a feminist - examining the roles, both domestic and social, played by men and women, and how equal the relationships between men and women are. Current critical lenses are Formalism/New Criticism, Post Modernism, Marxism, etc.…
