John Leo’s “When Life Imitates Video”: A Critical Response In his article, “When Life Imitates Video,” John Leo has a very established position on the effects of violent media on children of this generation. He provides argument after argument about why violent media has taken over our youth. Most of his arguments are recollections of past events that he claims are caused by violent video games. In one section he tries to link the schoolboy shooter in Kentucky to video games with an accusation that “head shots pay a bonus in many video games” (Leo). Not only is this a farfetched accusation but also he provides no evidence linking the two. Another link he tries to make is between the Colorado Massacre and the game Postal with a quote from the Los Angeles Time’s. In the game, the game ends with the main killer shooting himself in the head after a murderous spree. Leo claims that since the killers in the Colorado Massacre kill themselves in the same way, there must be a link between the game and the incident. He offers barely any counter arguments, and when he does they are not very sufficient counter arguments, for instance, Leo says “No, there isn’t a direct connection between most murderous games and most murders.” He cites a survey that questions 900 fourth graders about their favorite media as “widely cited” but fails to cite the survey himself; Leo also doesn’t provide a date for the survey (1). One thing he does that has some authority behind it is when he quotes a psychologist; this is the only other source he uses throughout the whole article. Between unsupported facts and lengthy connections between reallife incidents and video games, it is hard to consider this article any thing more than a blog entry of a man ranting on about his feelings.

    Violent video games have been blamed for school shootings, increases in bullying, and violence toward women. Critics argue that these games desensitize players to violence, reward players for stimulating violence, and teach children that violence is an acceptable behavior. Although critics believe this to be true, there are some people who believe otherwise such as Roger Pilon, who expressed his thought and ideas on the matter in an article he wrote that appeared in the Denver Rocky Mountain News paper on May 9, 1999, entitled “The Blame Game”. In this article he elaborated on the issue of video-game creators being held liable for for the crime that are committed today especially among the youth, for example the Littleton tragedy. Pilon speaks on how not only video game makers, but the media in general all have the right to create and advertise whatever they want by way of the Constitution and the only person who should be blamed and punished for a crime is the direct person who committed the crime. This is revealed by way of the audience Pilon intends to reach through his article which is law enforcers, and parents of video game players all to say that its not the video games that is causing the crime but its the individual.…

    Rampage, shootings, killing, murder, blood, and gore are all things that people think of when they hear the words, “Video Game.” Video games have quickly taken on the role of being harmful too kids. Could this be true? Crime rates have been on the rise for the last five decades, so we must ask do video games have anything to do with this? Are video games destroying our children? Every time a school shooting happens people look for something to blame. Furthermore, in the more recent decades people have been blaming the violence of video games, for in these games you have weapons that you often use to kill people or other things with.     As the police report was released and the public’s reaction to violent video games and young, unemployed males was risen, the article reported by the CBS draws the attention to the public on the real existence between the motivation of the criminal and his activities (Jaslow, 2013). The article argues how authorities and some experts did not have enough evidence to establish a link between the offender and the use of violent video games or the fact that the individual did experience some life trauma and frustrations prior to the crime (Jaslow, 2013).
