Critical Theory And Social Justice Major Critical Analysis
After speaking with a current senior at Occidental (Haarika Reddy), I discovered that I am drawn to the Critical Theory and Social Justice Major. Within this major, the goal of interdisciplinary learning would allow me to gain experience in the various aspects that affect our society today (Racial inequity and socioeconomics). Such courses as in Critical Race Theory, Postcolonial Studies, and Feminist Studies offer radical perspectives to reflect on, as they relate to the overall justice in our communities, and how new ideas may affect that in the future.

In the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to analyze the scope Mob Mentality. As part of a debate resolution, I argued the point of view of how this theory played a common role in the

When Best Buy first opened it was an event that an electronics store could hold such a variety of products, have knowledgeable employees, and offer competitive prices at the same time. Although in 2012 it was reported that revenues for Best Buy increased, the company still fell victim to the problems of having a decrease in net income and operating cash flow. “The company reported revenues of (U.S. Dollars) USD 50,705.00 million during the fiscal year ended March 2012, an increase of 1.93% over 2011. The operating profit of the company was USD 1,085.00 million during the fiscal year 2012, a decrease of 54.30% from 2011. The net loss of the company was USD 1,231.00 million during the fiscal year 2012, as against a net profit of USD 1,277.00 million during 2011 (Strategic Analysis 1).” It is obvious by these numbers that Best Buy, a company that has been historically successful, has been running into some recent troubles. In this report I will identify all of the potential reasons for Best Buy’s recent poor performance, as well as offer my opinion for the primary reasons for Best Buy’s recent sub-par performance.…

Romero (2006), in her article titled, “Racial profiling and immigration law enforcement,” uses two official investigation reports of a five-day immigration raid in Chandler, Arizona to identify micro and macro-aggressions that result from the use of racial profiling by immigration law enforcement and to document the impact it had on U.S. citizens and legal residents of Mexican ancestry by using a critical race theory framework. Romero begins by providing the function of national immigration policies. The author states she will be using a critical race theory framework to analyze the micro and macro aggressions by immigration law enforcements, which will be helpful to recognize the discriminatory functions that policing, and inspections have…

L.M. Montgomery once said, “...we pay the price for everything we get or take in this world”. What he is trying to say is that we have to face the consequences for the choices we make. There is always a result from everything that happens, giving or taking, will result in something else. I agree with his philosophy, mainly because it speaks pure truth about how most things are run in the common society that we as human beings live in. Two pieces of literature that best support this quote are “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, and “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding.…

Herodotus once said “men are at the mercy of events and cannot control them.” In saying this Herodotus meant that men cannot control any situation, but that it is fate that determines what is to occur. Prince Edward from The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain and Macbeth from Macbeth by William Shakespeare prove this statement to be both true and false.…

The provision of advanced courses is normally neglected by schools composed of minorities; therefore, students are forced to go at a slower pace which interrupts their learning. Tara J. Yoso and Daniel G. Solorzano, The students at the University of California, Mentioned in their article “Leaks in the Chicana and Chicano Pipeline”(2006) that schools are systems which promote white supremacy. They argue, “Most graduate programs tend to be racially exclusive featuring predominately white students, faculty and curricula that omit Chicana/o histories and perspectives”. As it is specifically mentioned in the article, the education system tends to be structured in a way which benefits “whites”. It is argued that these programs are “racially exclusive” which means that such programs segregate the kids and constitutes an idea of superiority for the “white” race. Therefore, although not specifically stated, the education system is set in order to fail the minority and shape them into the workers of…

In the article “Leaning In”, Robin DiAngelo, Ph.D., and Özlem Sensoy, Ph.D. guides students to a greater perspective when it comes to social justice. Social justice is a sensitive subject for many. DiAngelo and Sensory explain how we can become shut off to opinions or perspectives other than our own due to emotional reactions, personal experience, our culture, or simply what we hear on media or social groups mentioning throughout our lives. Students are encouraged to shy away from striving for achievement through their GPA and rather engage in the content at hand to enhance both their learning and understanding. By doing this, students become more open minded and available to apply their own educated critical thinking on subject matters.…

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly", was once said by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. This is an accurate quote to live by and refer to daily since following your instincts is usually the best decision for yourself. It leads you to do exactly what you want to do, instead of anyone getting to your mindset. This quote can also be shown in literature-characters go through hardships within there own minds. But when a third party expresses their own opinion of the problem then the character becomes confused and eventually withdrawled from what they really want. Accordingly, two works of literature that best show how following your heart(mind) is the better decision would be Tennesse Williams play The Glass Minagerie and Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. However, Tom and John Proctor are both faced with making a decision-good or bad, with help or not, a decision must be made. Along with problems in real life these two characters had to go with their "gut" instinct, and in the end-it was the best decision possible.…

Author, Harriet Davids, of “The Extended School Day” believes all elementary schools should adopt an extended school day policy. Davids main ideas focus on the safety of the children, whether it be in the care of a nanny or home alone, safety is the number one priority. Davids not only states that an extended school day will be beneficial to the parents and the students, but also the teachers and staff involved in the after school programs. In an affective essay there are seven essential elements that must be followed to skillfully create a forceful essay. Unfortunately, Davids lacks many of these elements in the entitled essay, “The Extended School Day”.…

As a way of resistance to the dominance of the Anglos, Chicano Studies emerged. Along with that, the Xican@ studies department has come a long way; it has opened the door to new curriculums such as LGTBQ, and Chicana Feminist, along with others related field, that are open to all students. The emergence of the Chicano Studies worked as a cause and effect. This contribution gave voice to the tension and contradictions characteristics of earlier Chicano positions. Over the course of youth’s childhood, they will eventually make a remarkable change from an adolescent into an adult, resembling a caterpillar undergoing metamorphosis and emerging into a beautiful butterfly. For years there has been a debate between teenagers and adults dealing with the topic of when teens rightfully become mature and grown up. Henry G. Felsen addresses this subject through telling his own sixteen year old son his opinions and thoughts on this debate in ‘When Does a Boy Become a Man?’. The difference between a boy and a man is not in which one looks like, it is the actions and choices that a man makes which differentiates him from the boy he once was. Henry Felsen has done a commendable job in supporting this theory. He explains what the future holds for these teens that rush into adulthood with the wrong idea of what it is all about.…

Civil rights and social injustice has always been a fascinating subject to me. This unit is definitely my favorite because I was able to explore something I am truly interested in and something that is applied to everyday life. This unit showed me how the amendments in our Bill of Rights can be applied to everyday life. Things like how First Amendment validated burning of the U.S Flag (Texas v Johnson), and how the Right to Privacy justified the decision of abortion in the Roe v Wade trial. I also learned how discrimination is not only found in within gender and racial minorities, but also in the physically disabled (American Disability Act) and the LGBT community (same-sex marriage decision).…
