Critique Of A Normal Orchestra Concert

The surrounding area was very nice in the fact this seemed like a true orchestra. Everyone on stage was quite formal. The ambiance reminded me of a classic venue, besides the fact that people were not dressed up. Other than that, it reminded me of a normal orchestra concert. The conductor was quite intriguing and it was very interesting because there was a combination of college students and young children. The first song that they played was Entrance of the Queen of Sheba by George F. Handel. This song had a very cheery note int he fact that the tempo was upbeat and portrayed something very happy. This song almost reminded me of being in a Disney movie and something dramatic happening and when it was just the flutes playing, it was a pause
in something dramatic to emphasize the little things. The second song was Fantasia on an Original Theme by Joseph J. Phillips. This song utilized a counterpoint and had a very interesting dynamic to the song. In the beginning, it was quite smooth and then you can hear a gradual change into something more dramatic. The contrast in the song portrayed a significant duality to the song which brought more character into the song. It reminded me of a song that would be played in Lord of the Rings while riding somewhere on horseback. The third song that they played was Hatikva by John Williams. This song is quite dramatic. It gave a presence of something being in a minor key as it was quite sad. It sounds as if someone just came to a realization of a bad situation and they are coming to a realization. This song is quite amazing in the fact of the movement of the song. The third song that was played was Prayer of St. Gregory by Alan Hovhaness. This song as if it would be played in a church. The long, smooth transitions give the presence of something that would be present in a church setting.
The fourth song is Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron Medley by Hans Zimmer is very intense. It sounds very dramatic and I can almost picture the instance in which this song takes place. It was portrayed very nicely from the orchestra itself. The fifth song was The Prince of Egypt by Stephen Schwartz and it reminded of the movie. Even if I did not watch the movie before, I could tell that the setting of the piece would be placed in Egypt. The song itself portrayed a setting of Egypt. The final song, Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez, was one of my favorite songs. This song reminded me of a smooth Jam almost, but then it was accented with parts of like an old swinger song. The flow, in the beginning, reminded me of something that someone could dance to but then, it changed into something more dramatic and more upbeat. The second portion reminded me of someone trying to finish something with urgency or they are trying to do multiple things at once at a fast pace. This contrast really mixed well with the song especially with parts that slowed down. Overall, I really enjoyed this concert and was executed very well. I hope to hear another concert by them
soon.
