Sparing the Innocent
Throughout the Crucible, there were many brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for a greater cause. When being accused of witchcraft, many of them denied these accusations because they were not true causing them to be put to death. They all tried to bring light to the fact that they were innocent, with no avail. Therefore, it is admirable to sacrifice oneself and spare the innocent, rather than sacrifice others in order to save yourself.
Giles Corey was an honest man, who would rather chose death over lying. Once the witchcraft trials began he went from having a simple life, to a life full of struggle and tough decisions. Keeping his integrity and honesty, he refused to lie even though it could have saved his life. When his wife was put on trial for witchcraft, Giles Corey argued against the court because he knew that his wife was innocent. He was later pressed to death by a stone because he would not give up the names of his friends in court. Although he was a brave man, it was even more courageous for Rebecca Nurse to endure her sentence.
Rebecca knew it was better to die for the truth than to live for a lie. When John Proctor signed for something that was a lie, she rebelled against his saying “Oh John-God sends his mercy on you!” (Rebeca Nurse). She lifted the spirits if those with her on the gallows by saying, “Let you fear nothing! Another judgment awaits us all!” (Rebecca Nurse). This allowed the people in the gallows faith because they knew God would decide their fate. They knew they had done the right thing so they were confident they would get into heaven. Rebecca Nurse showed her great honor in doing this, much like John Proctor.
Arguably, John Proctor showed the greatest sacrifice out of all. After deep internal struggles and decisions, he ultimately decided to sacrifice himself for the truth. Proctor did not want to confess to witchcraft because it is extremely
