What “test” does Hathorne think up for Mary Warren? What does Hathorne hope to prove with this “test”?…
In the play The Crucible there was a character that was afraid to admit they were wrong. In this particular case, Governor Danforth was afraid to admit he was wrong when accusing people of witchcraft. In the play, Danforth was the judge that determined who was a witch in Salem and who was not. If someone was accused of being a witch and they admitted to it they got to live. However if someone was accused of being a witch and denied it they were hung or killed.…
Often in life and in literature, people find themselves in overpowering situations. This is what Herodotus was referring to when he wrote, “Men are at the mercy of events and cannot control them.” In other words, people suffer not because of their own actions, but because of the situation in which they find themselves. This is true in considering Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck because George and Lennie, the two protagonists, and other minor characters suffer due to events beyond their control. Herodotus’ quotation is also true in considering William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, because the protagonists, Romeo and Juliet, are also overpowered by the forces that surround them. Herodotus’ quote proves particularly true in considering the setting of both novels, the conflicts within the two texts, and the characterization of the protagonists and even the minor characters within the novels.…
Arthur MILLER’s timeless classic the crucible demonstrates the flight between good and evil through an engaging plot, well crafted characters, and well established theme.…
There are three characters that are the most responsible for the witch trials in Salem, which are Abigail Williams for trying to avoid punishment for dancing in the woods and for jealousy towards Elizabeth Proctor, Reverend Samuel Parris for trying to protect his good name and his daughter and niece, and Reverend John Hale for being so convinced about the devil running loose in Salem and connecting every minor flaw with witchcraft, even though he later has a change of heart. Out of these three characters only two were thinking to fool the others, Abigail and Parris. Hale, on the other hand, was just a confident man that did everything by the book and thought that was the best way to do it, something we find out when he…
Martin Luther King, JR once said “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in the moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” This quote means that we only see people’s true color when they are faced with trouble or problems. I agree with this quote because you never know the people’s feelings until you know the problem they are faced with or are facing. Monster by Walter Dean Myers and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson used theme and setting to prove the critical lens. The main characters in both these novels overcome challenging situations by taking advantage of the opportunities presented to them. In their struggle to make the best of their circumstances, the main character Melinda in Speak and Steve in Monster illustrate the critical lens.…
According to Seneca, a Roman philosopher, “The bravest sight in the world is to see a great man struggling against adversity.” In other words, the boldest thing in this world is to see an honorable person fighting against misfortune, and never give up. I agree with this statement because it happens in real life and in literature. A man who goes against tragedy caused by nature, human or himself is considered great and honorable. Two works of literature that illustrate the quote as I have explained it are Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and Night by Elie Wiesel.…
In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the Puritans take part of a government that is based solely on the Bible. The good faith of the townspeople is quickly changed as many of the town’s high-standing citizens are accused of witchcraft, tried, and even hanged. In The Crucible, fear and faith relate very closely with the decisions that are made throughout the course of the trials and hangings of the Salem Witch Trials.…
Pythagoras once said, “Choices are the hinges of destiny.” The decisions that people make will ultimately lead them to their future. Ray Bradbury and Ayn Rand illustrate this idea in Fahrenheit 451 and Anthem, respectively. Both authors portray this idea with the characters decisions in each novel.…
L.M. Montgomery once said “We pay a price for everything we get or take in this world.” I think his idea of this is right. In order for you to accomplish what you want, there will be consequences and you need to get through it. I agree with this quote because it doesn't matter what you want to accomplish there will always be an outcome whether it’s good or bad. There are a lot of books that relate to this quote. One of them being, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and another called The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. Both Of Mice and Men and The Miracle Worker relate to this quote because they both experience and undergo situations and display actions that lead them to pay a price whether they caused it on themselves or not.…
There are several characters in Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible”, that despite their accusation of witchcraft, choose the truth before lying and going against their morals, knowing it would claim their lives. The quote can relate to characters like Rebecca Nurse, Giles Corey, and to some extent, John Proctor. They believe that honesty should come before conformity and that you should never betray your ideals even if lying could grant you another day.…
"When in doubt, tell the truth." Spoken by Mark Twain. Twains history consists of one of the most widely loved and celebrated American writers since his first books were released in the late 1860s, early 1870s. This quote has a very interesting realism and that makes it so true because if the people in the town of Salem heard this quote, they maybe would not have had to go through the Salem witch trials. The Salem witch trials of 1692 resulted in 19 executions and 150 accusations of witchcraft. Arthur Millers is one of the greatest and most well known playwrights of the twentieth century bases many of his characters off of real, living people. The characters of The Crucible have powerful characteristics that vary from the…
J.F. Clarke once stated, “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his or her conscience.” To me, this statement means that any individual who follows their conscience, and what they find to be right or wrong, is most brave, or strong, because they step away from society’s opinion and go with their own feelings whether it be what they need or desire. I agree with this statement because I also feel that an individual who listens to their conscience shows bravery. In my opinion someone who follows their conscience rather than society’s standards shows a lot of strength. It takes a lot of character for a person to leave their comfort zone to do the right thing, especially when that person has no support. Two literary works that support my opinion are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In both of these literary works the protagonists are faced with life altering decisions where they must make choices and differentiate right from wrong while having no support from other characters.…
The title the “crucible” by Author Miller is a metaphor for the witch trial in Salem that manipulates the impure hearts just as the crucible melts impure metal. The crucible was set in the Puritan society where religion was strict and everything; everyone was either belong to god or the devil. People in the Puritan society used that as a tool to gain power and wealth. Throughout the witch trial, many people with impure hearts were manipulated by the overwhelming power of being connected to god and tried to benefit from it but eventually it led to their own destruction such as Abigail, Thomas Putnam and Paris. On the other hand many people with pure hearts were willing to be hanged than named other people such as Giles Corey and John Proctor.…
“Reading good literature won’t make a reader a better person any more than just sitting in a church, synagogue, or mosque will. But reading good books well just might.” This quote is from the article “How Reading Makes Us More Human.” It shows that although the common belief is that reading will make us better people, it doesn’t mean anything to us unless we really know how to comprehend the book itself and allow it to influence our decisions. A text that applies to this idea is A Raisin in the Sun. It is just a normal book until you take it to a new realization and apply it to much more. Through this book, I have learned how characters are influenced by their surroundings, how pieces of the book connect to this quote, and how my life has been influenced by the actions of characters throughout the book.…
