Entry 1
January, 20, 1692 Dancing in the woods they said, with the dirty Tituba, conjuring unholy spirits. Aye, I know exactly who started this rumor. He’s playing with me.
I know he is… I will talk to the other girls who were with me in the woods. Goody proctor will get what’s coming to her. Oh, I can’t stand that woman. The devil is in that woman, no doubt about that, And trust me she will be hanged for it. But she is too much trusted by the village , I need to expose her, rough off that thin layer of “godliness” ,which shouldn’t be hard. No, this has to go deeper. She has to pay.My ,how easily my father and mother are fooled. I have them wrapped around my finger, that doctor had no medical training at all and with a little coaxing I got him to see my way .Now the town of Salem sees me and betty’s “sickness” as a bewitchment. Everybody is talking
This whole cursed town will pay…
Entry 2
March ,1 1692 Now the whole town is suspicious of Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. I can hear our holy savior thanking me, praising for doing his work.
But obviously some people don’t agree , they give me and my girls dirty stares. Don’t worry, they’ll be next. The more I walk down the streets, the more I see how incredibly cursed this town is. I was put on this earth to clear this town of all of it witches and I will do so, nothing will stop me. I had to remind the girls why we are doing this. Trust me, they won’t disobey me or our heavenly father again. SHE CONFESSED!! Thank the lord !!Tituba confessed !!
I can’t say the same for Goody Good and Goody Osborne, but Our lord and savior was correct! I will make sure their necks will break for this.

If lies weren’t told, the whole of Salem would have thought us of villains in league with the Devil. If this was to be the case we would have been hung; I would have been hung. John, my heart would ache knowing that you’d continue your life with that sickly woman without me. So I lied and blamed it on Tituba, who would’ve guessed that from that moment, hysteria and panic would have uplifted through the town of…

He is becoming more cynical and reasonable that he begins to interview the people of Salem to discover the truth. Reverend Hale goes to question the Proctors without the knowledge of the court because Goody Proctor is the ideal christian woman, but is still being prosecuted by the court on accounts of witchcraft. He confronts John Proctor to ask him if he has “ no belief that there may even be witches in the world” (Miller 40 ). This shows that Hale is worried and curious about what truly is going on. When John Proctor gets convicted in Act III due to Abigail’s transparent schemes, Hale’s confidence in witches is completely shattered. He is completely fed up with the situation and tell Judge Danforth that he will not “dare not take a life without there be a proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it” (Miller 214). He quits the court and storms out of the scene in pure anger. Knowing the misjustice going on in Salem Reverend Hale begs John Proctor to sign the statement that is a lie, but will save his life. As the novel progressed, Reverend Hale began to be more reasonable and open to other’s opinions leading him to become a vague man who is fully against the…

When Hale came to Salem, "to ascertain witchcraft, he felt the pride of the specialist whose unique knowledge has … been publicly called for"(33). He thought of his task as just and righteous. Hale believed that "the Devil is precise; the marks of his presence are definite as stone…"(38), and that identifying whether the Devil was living in Salem would not be difficult. However, as the play progressed, he began to question whether he was doing his job or not over the course of the trials. He decided to visit the homes of the people mentioned, so that he could "draw a clear opinion of them"(63) and be able to pass judgment on them properly in court. As he made the visits, his ignorance was cleared away and he saw that the courts were not entirely correct. He grew even more concerned when he was notified that Rebecca Nurse, a woman he had a good opinion about, had been charged with murder. Although Hale becomes "deeply troubled"(71), he still has faith in the courts. This is evident when he says, "Believe me, Mr. Nurse, if Rebecca Nurse be tainted, then nothing’s left to stop the whole green world from burning. Let you rest upon the justice…

For Reverend Hale the witch hunt in Salem is the scene of a moral journey as he eventually makes a complete turn around in thoughts and beliefs as he is forced to see certain realities. At the start of Reverend Hale's metamorphosis he is so sure of himself and of his belief, in witches, that he even inadvertently eases their lying. At this point when he meets Parris and the girls who have been ‘‘ bewitched'' he encourages them to talk about their being bewitched, and puts some words into their mouths, but he only does this because he really believes in witches, and believes the girls' stories. This back fires however, and helps the girls with their lies. Soon after the trials begin Hale begins to have doubts in the girls. Hale has been seeing respectable people being charged, and this has flickered a doubt in his mind. After a few days of court Hale visits several households without the courts authority, and goes to John Proctors house to have a few words with John and his wife . At the end of the talks Proctor states : ‘‘ And why not, if they must hang for denying it? There are them that will swear to anything before they'll hang ; have you never thought of that?'' (69).…

Abi has made sinners of us all. I had sworn my name to child’s stories. I never saw goody Osburn a witch, but Abi -the girls. They cry, they scream, they-they choke. I look, as hard as I can but I – I don’t see, I see nothin’. And I lie. Every lie that escapes my mouth, I feel the weight of the noose burden my shoulders. Bucklin’ my knees, clasping my throat, pushin’, pressing, tightening. My skin turns to ice from fear that Hathorne will question and he will see, my pretence will be known. I can hear their haunting cries of witchcraft if I dare testify their pretence to save my soul. Gad dams all liars. I never seen no spirits. The girls, they look to Abi, they too lie, I know it be true. They see nothing. Those not witness, to invisible crimes are accused. We - I had to choose. I must be a witness, bound to Abi, bound to witchcraft. I’ve placed my soul within Devil’s reach.…
