The Demographics of Crystal Methamphetamine: Who Uses it, and Why?
Crystal methamphetamine (meth) use evokes passionate discourses in popular culture, and in, official, scholarly, and clinical circles. A synthetic drug that has roots in the German amphetamine of the late nineteenth century; crystal meth has gained an unprecedented popularity because of the ease with which individuals can produce it and the associated potent effects. Furthermore, the body of research on the drug has generated the conclusions necessary to profile certain individuals? probability of crystal meth addiction. However, this study addresses the gap in research evidenced by a lack of sufficient connection between which demography is more likely to abuse crystal meth, and why. On the other hand, the research seeks to fill the gap occasioned by the proliferation of mainly quantitative studies on crystal meth use, without a corresponding increase in qualitative research on the subject. The paper contends that crystal meth use is on the rise, as the statistics from existing literature indicates. However, the effects of the abuse on both the user?s body and his or her immediate relations continue to be a source of concern. The trade in crystal meth also perpetuates a violent and illegal underworld, which is the source of social welfare efforts to force policy makers to take a more proactive stance on the matter. As a synthetic drug, crystal meth is relatively easy to synthesize because the majority of the ingredients are acquirable legally, off the shelf.
The majority of crystal meth users are Caucasians, followed closely by Latinos then American Asians (Linnemann & Wall, 2013). However, Blacks have a predominant dislike for the drug, citing its association with the ?White trash? image, undesirable side effects, and the risk of poisoning through the drug?s ingredients that are meant to ?purify? it during synthesis (Copes, Kerley, Angulski, & Zaleski, 2014). The use of shocking images, on the other hand, has managed to enhance the effectiveness of anti-crystal meth use campaigns. The most notable side effect of crystal meth use; namely, the loss of teeth and rapid weight loss have continued to dissuade potential users from engaging in the vice (Brownstein, Mulcahy, Fernandes-Huessy, Taylor, & Woods, 2012).
