Market Segmentation: Identifying and Defining Consumer Segments
1. Flashpackers are individuals who:
Travel with backpacks, but with flash or style. It Is a newly coined term used to refer to “wealthy” backpacking. They have been know to be very tech-savvy and desire to travel with a laptop or a cell phone, although these aren’t required to be coined a flashpacker. They stay in decent accommodations and take taxis.
This quote sums it up very nicely: “The flashpacker has been viewed as a ‘key constituent of contemporary society’ emerging from the economic, demographic, technological, and social changes in the world” (Hannam &Diekmann, 2010)
2. Backpackers are individuals who:
Can be found in every corner of the world, from major cities like Paris to remote villages in the Congo’s. They carry with them their own physical baggage that is part of them and gives them their name and their cultural baggage as well. Backpackers want to experience the real version of their trip without interruptions associated with mass tourism and societies need for technology. They have been referred to as anti-tourists. For many Backpacking is a right of passage in countries like Northern Europe, New Zealand, Israel, and Australia. (Richards, Greg; Julie Wilson 2004).
Sorenson says backpacking is commonly referred to as a group of people seen as self organized pleasure tourists on a long multiple destination trip with flexible days and relaxed time frames, their itinerary is very elastic. (Sorenson 2003: 851).
3. Gappackers are individuals who:
