Is President Obama right or wrong to normalize relations with Cuba? For over half a century the United States has had issues with the island of Cuba. The Castro family has had a line of Presidents that have been cruel and untrustworthy. The U.S. imposed an embargo on Cuba which made it illegal for businesses to trade with them. Recently President Obama has decided to thaw the ice with Cuba and change the relationship with them that has lasted so long. So the question arises, “is President Obama right or wrong to normalize relations with Cuba?” President Obama is right to normalize relations with Cuba because it will economically benefit us and Cuba is no longer a threat to the United States. The first reason why President Obama is correct is because the U.S. will greatly benefit from lifting the embargo and trading with Cuba. According to publicintegrity.org, “Florida businesses have been planning, largely in secret, for the lifting of the U.S. embargo for decades.” This shows that the U.S. has been prepared to lift the embargo with Cuba and there will be many new economic …show more content…
Republican Senator Marco Rubio from Florida says, “All this is going to do is give the Castro regime, which controls every aspect of Cuban life, the opportunity to manipulate these changes to perpetuate itself in power.” Rubio is a son of Cuban immigrants and is a Republican. The U.S. normalizing relations with Cuba will give them some power and will help them improve their country. Trading with them will allow them to gain more goods and make more money. But it will also give the U.S. power over them. By going to their country and observing what goes on there we gain more power and knowledge. We can take their power away by issuing another embargo and their economy will crash. Cuba can have power but the United States will have even more over
