Cultural Anthropology: Textual Analysis
The chapter 2 in the textbook “Cultural Anthropology” mentions about the reflection in culture of nonhuman primates onto human’s one. In this chapter, I really impress about the idea “natural selection”. “Natural selection is the process by which organism better adapt to the environment reproduce more effectively compared with less well-adapted forms”(“The evolution of humanity and culture”) The “natural selection”, for me, is the best explanation for the difference between our modern humans and nonhuman primates. From the beginning, every nonhuman species, including humans, had a common root. However, because of the difference sources of food, they changed their body structures (teeth, intestine) to adapt to their dietary needs. For example,

Do non-human primates have culture similar to humans? Communication skills mostly support that these primates have culture because primates learn communication through gestures and facial expressions. Anthropological definition of culture is all aspects of human adaptation, including technology, traditions, language, religion, and social roles. Culture is a set of learned behaviors; it is transmitted from one generation to the next through learning and not by biological or genetic means.…

Human are classified in the primate order. The primate order contains countless species of prosimians, monkeys, apes, and us. Moreover even though humans are classified along with other primates the nearest relative is chimpanzees. Similarly, humans and chimpanzees share, “anatomy, and genetic material” that has been noted for several years now. By sharing similar traits it is noted as a vital part of human evolution. Human evolution is the development of humans also known as Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens are categorized in the Hominidae family, a family that has shown to ensure increased brain size with complexity and bipedalism. Chimpanzees have undergone many different changes during that resulted in binocular vision, mobile digits without claws but nails, decreasing in sense of smell due to a reduced snout, large and complex brains. Specific traits are illustrated distinctively within humans (Kottak, 2009).…

Moreover, the material covered is highly specialized and may seem hard to follow for readers without a background in anthropology. There are several concepts, such as the idea of primate ancestry, that everyday people might not comprehend. This article might also receive resistance from those who do not agree with evolution, or even outright denial. I personally enjoy this article and the way the author presents the information. It is helpful for readers to have both sides of the argument, and Hoffman presents this skill when he includes the opposing views of other esteemed researchers. Not only does Hoffman present this information well, but also he ties the information with evidence from reliable sources, which boosts this article and keeps it entertaining. Hoffman is an excellent writer and does a good job stimulating his reader, assuming they have some background in anthropology or general…

The animal that most resembles us is the ape. At the zoo, it is easy to observe behavioral and facial expressions in monkeys and apes that are very much similar to our own. A group of apes could very well seem like a family. A mother taking care of her young may seem familiar to the human onlooker. This is because the ape is our closest living relative. In the documentary Primate Behavior, anthropologists observe the behavior of monkeys and primates. The primates are mostly observed in the wild, as they are better understood while placed in a natural setting. This is where the social structure of the primate can really be interpreted.…

It is suspected that a new species (humans) was created because there was no longer a need for swinging from trees. Upright walking on the ground had requirements for alterations in the foot for the better speed and balance. These uncommon traits soon became traits that evolved to permit movement on the ground. Though humans and monkeys are genetically common, their natural habitat required different physical traits to evolve for them to stay…

I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the “lower animals” (so-called), and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since it now seems plain to me that the theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals.…

In humans the mother also cares for her baby when is born in similar ways as the non-human primates. I learned a lot of information about primates by doing this assignment, observing the behaviors of each primate group was impressive and that the way they behave is similar to humans.…
