In the article Cultural Competency: Values, Traditions and Effective Practices, by Carol Brannon she defines Cultural competency, as “the ability to understand and respond effectively to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients or clients”(p.2). Cultural competence and ethical responsibility of counselors is an issue that holds increasing importance. To be both multicultural and ethical is increasingly challenging. The population of the United States is changing quickly from a predominately white Caucasian society to an ethnically diverse society`. The Hispanic population, which represented only 9% of the population in 1990, is projected to increase to about 25% of the population by 2050. The number of African Americans, Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, and American Indians/Eskimos/Aleuts will continue to increase as well (Aponte & Wohl, 2000). It has been predicted that Whites, who made up three fourths of the U.S. population in 1990, will no longer be in the majority by the year 2050 (Sue, 1996). These demographic changes mean that clients of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds increase importance of making multicultural competence a necessary standard.…

Throughout my practicum, I have realized the importance of being aware of the clients and their backgrounds. I didn’t realize that there was a client in one of the group sessions that was homosexual. When my comment in the group was taken to mean a husband and wife relationship, I didn’t know his background or situation. The other therapist commented and asked how he felt about the topic and if he was uncomfortable. He mentioned that he was ok with it, he felt he could apply what they were saying to any other kind of relationship. He also said that he had come to terms to the fact that he would probably never get married. This just made me realize that I was no longer just with heterosexual LDS men and later I would…
