Critically analyze definitions of cultural competence and describe in your own words, what is the definition of cultural competence?…
Becoming more of a culturally competent, educator reflects upon our own beliefs, values and the different way of doing things. This is a challenge that I know for a fact that educators must accomplish for themselves. We must learn about our students so we will be able to better assist in their learning experiences. Creating an environment that is welcoming will allow students to be more comfortable in interacting in a diverse…
Using the Self-Assessment of Perceived Level of Cultural Competence (SAPLCC) questionnaire, frequencies, means, and ANOVAS were determined to create medical and pharmacy student profiles of cultural competence. Profiles were used to identify needs for training and underscore critical issues that should be given priority in the curriculum. Significant differences were found in several domains of cultural competence (knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities); they may be explained by differences in the implementation of a pilot curriculum, the racial composition of students in both programs, and other characteristics. However, in the awareness domain, the main differences found may be explained only by respondents' attitudes and their personal…
When we are younger our minds are constantly being molded to different ideas. Sometimes those ideas are positive and at times, negative. When there are negative ideas floating through a young brain it can produce a negative outcome. It can make one scared to feel opposite of what they are being taught to feel, and it can make one afraid to follow what the heart is telling one to do, in Opal Palmer Adisa’s essay “Laying in the Tall Grasses, Eating Cane” Opal speaks of growing up in Jamaica. She talks of although growing up in a country full of culture and literature, while living there she had no idea such culture existed. It was only after she left her homeland that she learned of her country’s richness in culture and literature. The theme in Adisa’s essay was simply, lack of culture taught at a young age can breed certain ignorance towards one’s culture. It was only when she moved away from her homeland that she began to see the bias of how she was being taught as a child. She discovered a whole new love for her culture, and for her skill, writing.…

Though Purnell’s focus was for health care, it can be adopted to any sector as a framework for cultural competence. Therefore, we are using it to apply to the education sector; specifically, in high school and postsecondary settings. The primary lens of this model was for medical/healthcare model of cultural competence. Therefore, this model is adapted for the social services sector as a social model of cultural competence. The undergirding of this model is the interrelating of the characteristics of culture to be considered in developing a more equitable and inclusive environment (Purnell, 2008). Purnell focus is on the development of a more culturally inclusive model that is sensitive to all cultures to promote and facilitate a more sensitive…
There are many challenges for one to become culturally competent, one may have to look at their own bias’s or prejudices in order to gain an understanding of why we make some of the decisions that we do. Education plays an important role in understanding how to become more sensitive to cultures, ethnicities, and genders different from our own.…
To begin my journey on mastering each area of cultural competence, I need to first assess my placement in each of the five categories. A very important area is cultural awareness. This involves conducting self-examination of any biases that I may have towards a certain culture. I am guilty of having such biases. While I do not have many biases, it is important that I work through each one and realize that biases are not facts. I am a Caucasian female who grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. I attended a private school from kindergarten until my sophomore year of college. My school was not very diverse. Once I started working, I was able to meet a few more people of different cultures. All of my professions have been in the suburbs, and the majority of people have been Caucasian. Eastern Michigan University is very diverse. I am glad that I am finally able to experience such an environment.…
Culture is regarded as a sequence of morals and behaviors that will define a particular cultural, societal or age of individuals. Certain groups are associated with values and actions that are communicated or understood through culture. Culture ordinarily describes life as time given every individual conforms to certain rules that shape a fraction of their culture. Adolescent substance abuse is influenced greatly by his or her culture (Griswold et al. 2008). Certain cultures agree to that adolescent can indulge in illegal substances because it is permitted by his or her culture.…
As stated by Karen Kearns (2014, p. 367) “Cultural competence is the ability to understand communicate with and effectively, interact with people across cultures. Cultural competence can be embodied in policies and procedures that seek to ensure that cultural diversity is respected and embraced by all members of an organisation.” Cultural competence can also refer to relationships that are made across cultures whether it be as an individual or as a group. Also an individual or groups attitude across the different cultures. Cultural competence to an educator means to be understanding and communicate with families and children, keeping in mind your values, beliefs and attitudes because cultural competence is to act, behave and communicate on…
Cultural competence is defined as possessing the skills and knowledge necessary to appreciate, respect, and work with individuals from different cultures. It is a concept that requires self-awareness, awareness and understanding of cultural differences, and the ability to adapt to clinical skills and practices as needed. For instance, before my grandmother had passed, my family wanted to do a traditional prayer ceremony for her in the hospital. It is where we have a monk in the same room, doing the a Buddhist Prayer for peace. Indeed, with the help of the staff members on her floor, the nurses understood why my family request a monk to do a Buddhist Prayer and to have our whole family attends the prayer. In fact, the nurses would only allow two people to see my grandmother at a time, but in this case, the nurses allowed to have my whole family and the monk to be with our grandmother. Of course, without the help of Josepha Campinha-Bacote theory, Buddhist Prayer in the hospital would not have been allowed. According to the article, “The Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services: A Model of Care,” Josepha Campinha-Bacote mentioned a model that “requires health care providers to see themselves as becoming culturally competent rather than already being culturally competent. This process involves the integration of cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural encounters, and cultural desire” ( Josepha Campinha-Bacote, 2010).…
Hello Noemi, I think you have done a good job with your post. I also believe that you have defined the meaning of cultural competence and theory very well. It is important to have these two concepts added to the health care system because it allows people from different cultural background to feel comfortable with that health care provider. It might help the patient to be willing to listen and learn from the provider because that person may feel as if he or she is being understood. In my experience, I believe the health care providers are well trained in this area.…
