Cultural Competencies That Happen At Nick's School
The learning experiences and cultural competencies that I believe were valued at Nick’s school, based on the information presented in the video was subjecting Nick to multiply testing because of his learning abilities. Once Nick was diagnosed with ADD, he was no longer treated the same. Because of this label that was given to him, he was followed around, put into classes that “supposedly” catered to his learning capabilities and he didn’t have the freedom to choose what he wanted to learn and how he should learn. This created a barrier for Nick because he was unable to explore and feel like a regular student. According to Nick, “I was denied the right to exist normally. My school had wasted my time until there was no time left.” Nick had the right to feel the way he felt because he was denied the right to exist normally. Nick was subjected to taking drugs which in the end didn’t make him feel any better than the way he already felt about what he was personally experiencing at school.
The school didn’t take into consideration the cultural competencies that they could have at least look at regarding Nick’s situation. If the school did take into consideration the cultural competencies, I believe that they should have focus on the value of diversity. Nick value of diversity was not taken into consideration. Becoming more of a culturally competent, educator reflects upon our own beliefs, values and the different way of doing things. This is a challenge that I know for a fact that educators must accomplish for themselves. We must learn about our students so we will be able to better assist in their learning experiences.     A safe cultural environment is a place where there is no physical or emotional threatening because of individual differences. The classroom is very diverse due to the fact that the community the school is placed in is multicultural.
