The Bahamas is a great nation that has overcome many obstacles in the past; there are many men and women that have sacrificed a lot for this country to be what it is today. However, according to Nicolette Bethel in her text “On Independence”, she states “instead of aiming for stars, we turn our backs on them because to reach that high might cost too much”. Bethel’s quote is expressing the lack of interest to succeed and also the fear of failure in Bahamians. In today’s society Bahamians are afraid to try because they are afraid they might fail. Our forefathers tried no matter what the outcome would be and were always encouraged to preserve. Based on Bethel’s editorial our forefathers fought for what they wanted and I quote “In the 1950s and 1960s a group of men and women began a revolution that would change the face of the Bahamas for good by imagining that black people could rule themselves”- On Independence. As a country we must set high goals, dreams and standards for our people to shadow or to contemplate. Our forefathers dreamt of a more urbanized and enhanced country. However, we have let them down because many of us are too dependent on the government; several students aren’t taking advantage of the opportunities given and because of the broken family structure.
As a nation we are too dependent on our government for things we are responsible for ourselves. Many Bahamians are quick to call upon the government for its help to provide jobs for them once they are elected. For instance in the 2012 General Elections many people voted for the Progressive Liberal Party in hopes that the party would provide them with instant jobs when they would have won. As a nation we need not to be fully dependent on the government to provide for the things that we need so that we can grow. Many people rely on the government to do provide for their every need, which
