Race is something that we have created that is based upon an individual’s skin color. As Goodman states, “there is no clear marker to designate where one ‘race’ begins and another ends. Kushner defines culture as “many different disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, education, psychology, health, business, and the military” (Textbook page 69). For instance, the culture of your family, community, state, country, etc. Culture is what influences an individual. According to Kushner “culture determines, to a large extent, people’s thoughts, ideas, patterns of interaction, and material adaptations to the world around them” (Textbook page 69). Therefore, teachers need to adapt to the cultural needs of their students to meet the needs of each and every one of them. “Teachers must become more knowledgeable about the role of culture in teaching and learning while becoming better able to address the educational needs of students and families from a variety of backgrounds. At the same time, teachers must turn this knowledge and skill into content that actively engages students in learning about and effectively accommodating cultural differences” (Text book page 112). There are so many different aspect to culture. We may not know all the factors that establish a culture but we should use what we have come to know to understand to reach out to our students.
