In chapter 10, I will be focusing on stereotypes on Latinos. Stereotypes are untrue generalizations about categories of people that do not acknowledge individual variation. In other words, stereotypes are untrue statements made up about an individual. An example of a stereotype is all blonds are dumb, all teens are rebels, and all Latinos are in welfare.…
In my adventure to find the right store for this assignment, I solicited the assistance of my neighbor. My neighbor, Edith Yarbor and her husband Larry own a convenience store in Agua Prieta, located in the northern region of Sonota, Mexico so this was the venue of choice for me to observe for a few hours.…
PTSD can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or race. According to Robert E. Emery, an estimated 10% of women and 5% of men will experience PTSD at some point of their life. It is this 15% of the population who has to be consciously aware of the tragic events that have taken place, but not let it act as barrier hindering them from continuing to live their…
It means the great triumphs in science and the artistic style of expression of the Latino culture. Which includes many scholars and artists overcoming stereotypes of minorities and abuse to express their individual style. From the scientific invention developed by Ellen Ochoa to the artistic creations from Frida Kahlo, these amazing achievements have influenced society which enables us to lead towards a better future. As we grow up we are able to see the progression of expression and freedom of the Latino culture, and as a minority it inspires many people to achieve what was once thought to be impossible to something achievable. This in itself inspires many people and many other cultures to challenge themselves to achieve something greater…
The two family types I have chosen to compare are the Hispanic/Latino families and the Asian families. Similarities between the two are that they both have strong family ties. Both support the family, meaning the extended family and/or elders within their family unit. Parents and children will work to economically support the family. Also, extended family members may live under one roof.…
The issue of improving Latino/a American mental health warrants consideration given that Latino/a Americans are not only the most diverse cultural subgroup, they are also the fastest growing minority in the United…
I can say the similitudes between Hispanic and Latino is that they are in the same region, but not necessary have to be their first speaking language. Referring to the fact that Hispanic comes from the Latin word “Hispanicus” meaning that is from Hispania, which if we translate to English it will be Spain as the name of the country of España. On the other hand some differences between these two terms will be that Hispanic refers to the same language and Latin is based on geographical. Caribbean’s, Brazil and Portugal they are in the side of Latin American based on the fact that they don’t have different speaking language comparing to the Hispanic. Chicano manly refer to the Mexican-American, meaning that it is originally from Mexicans that…
The targeted populated would be the veterans who suffer with PTSD, who are homeless, living in poverty, and with mental and physical health issues. Among this group will include the veterans of all cultures; Hispanic, African-American, Whites, Asian, Native Hawaiian and American Indians. Ethnic minority plays a role in the risk factor for PTSD along with the specific war they were involved in. Race-related stressors need to be addressed in order to properly assess and treat the full range of issues that ethnic minority Veterans face (Loo, 2015). The appropriate…
America is a nation of immigrants. Unless your ancestors were the indigenous people to the land, you as well are a descendant of an immigrant. Throughout our history, the immigrant population has grown and developed over time. Consequently, a need has risen for social work practice within this group of people. There are many different kinds of immigrants worldwide. All of them have their own culture, ethnicity, beliefs, values, nationalities, and etc. that they bring with them. In fact, those are the very things that make group work with these individuals an interesting topic. Needless to say, many immigrants do not seek out services. This is due in part to certain cultures discouraging such things. It can also be attributed to the abuse many of them have encountered in their…
In my Jamaican culture we have a different Thanksgiving and Christmas ceremonies/events compared to my regular American culture. In my Dominican culture we have to travel around the world visiting different family members to celebrate those holidays with my mother's side of the family. When we flew to Jamaica, I instantly noticed the cultural changes in the way they dressed and how their music was different from American music. I started to notice where my father got his traditions from. Thanksgiving there lasts for a couple days and it's nothing but unique foods and dances.…
In a nation that boasts such a diverse and colorful population , it is surprising how quick it’s mono racial inhabitants and government are to discriminate and build walls between themselves and their mixed race counterparts. In light of the mixed race Latino, they are one of the major unaccepted groups known to Man. Basically they carry around the image of being partly involved with the Hispanic stigmatized minority group which therefore later insinuates struggles down the road with personal identification development. In such a long run of years various governments and powerful , elite heads of large corporations have aimed their concerns at keeping the…
* Many women learn how to calculate their ovulation when they first talk to a doctor about birth control. But some may still question whether they can get pregnant if they aren't ovulating. The answer to that question is not as straightforward as it seems. One would think that if a woman isn't ovulating, she can't get pregnant. This is only partially true. Generally, a woman isn't fertile if she isn't ovulating. If she isn't ovulating, she has no egg present to be fertilized outside the ovulation period. The confusion comes when trying to decipher when the ovulation period really is. Sometimes a woman can ovulate beyond what she considers her normal ovulating period, and she can become pregnant outside of her calculated fertility window.…
Every year my family and I take part in a Mexico Missions Trip that my church goes on, to help make a difference in the lives of others and their society. By doing this, my family and I get to see and learn a lot about other cultures and languages that people use to live by and communicate with. Viewing all of this at such a young age, has made more appreciative of things growing up and also helps me get a better global perspective. I am exposed to many new things and enviorments that most people would never experience in their entire life time. When going to other parts of the country and spending time living life in other people 's shoes, you tend to start to feel a little bit of culture shock and begin to wish you were back home.…
In times of rapid growth, both in terms of economic development and globalization, an increasing number of firms extend their businesses abroad. A subsequent challenge of this development is the managerial implications of cross-cultural management. This study employs a qualitative approach in a single case study of Swedish company and its subsidiary in China. After reviewing the previous studies, the authors summarize the differences of management style, staff behaviors and communication system in different culture context and find the barriers of cross cultural communication in multinational firms. The findings of this study indicate that the barriers of communication come from the national culture’s influence on the work place and behaviors of people with different identity. Moreover, culture also influences people’s way of thinking and behaving and result in different understandings toward vision and purposes of firms. Key words: cross cultural, communication, multinational firms, management style, staff behavior…
