The Spiritan founders and sponsors of Duquesne University have always believed in welcoming all and excluding none; which is why the students, faculty and staff of this university come from a collection of different ethnicities, races, cultures and backgrounds. Diversity is something that is important to me and Duquesne University. Being an Carribean-American woman, from the suburbs of Middletown, Delaware will make me a minority in the city of Pittsburg. Being that the foundation of Duquesne University’s rich and vital community of learners is diversity in itself, I can be a key contributor to this community.…
On page 62 of SDL by Damon A. Williams’s book, he asserted that ‘it is vital that academic institutions engaged diversity issues in their curricular and curricular activities.’ Like Damon I understand that the growing diverse society that we are currently living in required everyone to be knowledgeable of diversity. This means that cultural competency education should be implemented in postsecondary curriculum. Indeed, it is ironic to believe that children and adolescents whom went to school with students that most likely look like them would be able to quickly cope with a postsecondary diverse curriculum. Nevertheless, it seems that, colleges are the best place to create a curriculum where student learn to be cultural competent.…

In simple terms, cultural diversity can be defined as the level of diversity or difference in a given society. Societies that display high levels of diversity exhibit many differences across that population. Differences can include skin color, religious affiliation, cultural practices and other ethnic beliefs and customs. Immigration is a major factor in determining the level of diversity that a given society is exposed to. Ever since the dawn of time, humans have traveled the globe in curiosity to interact with other civilizations. These interactions were either well intentioned to share and form partnerships, or militaristic conquests to expand territories and force populations to conform to foreign ideals. These such interactions helped to foster cultural diversity both genetically, as is the case with Attila the Hun, or substantively through the spread of cultural beliefs and practices worldwide.…

What does Diversity and Multiculturalism mean to me? I believe that diversity has become so much more than just the basic qualities of race or gender. It now includes all qualities that make everyone unique, as individuals or as part of a larger group. It is also the acceptance, respect, and understanding of these unique qualities that makes diversity work in a given society. Multiculturalism is the system that is centered around the respect for and the promotion of ethnic and or gender diversity in the society. Multiculturalism is the status of several different ethnic, racial, religious or cultural groups co-existing in the same society. Today, in the U.S. we already live in a diverse, multicultural world, where popular culture has introduced us to others’ foods, music, histories, customs, and more. Moreover, the predictions that a multiplicity of infusions from culture to culture will continue unabated – and that we must develop a respect for others if we are to be active, engaged participants in the new world order (Green, 1998).…

Looking back on the modules that I have already completed have heightened my awareness of the scope of the elderly population and the vast amount of resources that are there to assist us as we age. It has also make me come to grip with aging, or realize that I will be an elder in the near future and that there are certain steps I have to take, plans that I have to put in place and to start preparing my own path for when that time comes.…
