Cultural Imperialism – Cartoon analysis

The given cartoon “Globalization Invading Markets’” was published in 2005. It displays a coastline, including the sea and a beach, with people holding up their hands and running away. Moreover there are battleships, firing artillery onto the land and carrier boats are transporting further people ashore. Also fighter aircrafts, dropping more artillery onto the land are shown. The people, who go ashore, are figures from Walt Disney’s comic world, including lots of Goofys, Dagobert Duck and a smiling Mickey Mouse. The Goofys and Mickey Mouse are holding guns in their hands.

Starting with the interpretation, Dagobert represents the commander of an army, as Mickey Mouse and the Goofys represent soldiers, all standing for the U.S. army. Following the orders of the commander the soldiers are driving away the couple of human beings, respectively natives of the area, who are surrendering. The area is picturing a Third World country, perhaps a tropical island. The invaders are Americans, because their uniforms, the aircrafts and the warships hold trademarks of big American companies, for instance Nike, Texaco, McDonald’s and Motorola. In the background a group of Goofy soldiers are setting up a Microsoft flag. A scene reminiscent of the famous photograph of a group of soldiers at Iwo Jima. (Battle of Iwo Jima, 1945. US fighting for + capturing island of Iwo Jema, Japanese Empire. Some of bloodiest fighting in Pacific War took place).

Instead of regular artillery and ammunition, shooting takes place with Coke cans and TVs. This signifies that the U.S. economy is spreading a massive influence across the world, even to remote islands. It looks more harmless than an attack with real armoury, but the fact that there is a dead man lying on the ground emphasizes Americans being ruthless and aggressive.

The meaning of the cartoon indicates a modern invasion, which does not have to be fought

Avatar was created after Disney’s animated film “ Pocahontas.” It cost around $237 million to make the movie. Imperialism is a policy of extending a country’s power influence through diplomacy or military force. The age of imperialism was around the 1870s. The regions assumed control of other regions were British, French, German, Belgian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Independent. They took over most of Africa for a very long time. Imperialism is thought of negative because it was to denounce and discredit it an opponent's foreign policy. James Cameron directed Avatar on December 18th 2009. It took 4 years for him to finish the film. In Avatar, Ex marines and military enforcements move into Pandora. They try to take over the land to mine for unobtainium. They end up killing a lot of their men trying to gain control over the natives living on the land. The whole plan backfires on them and end up having to leave. Avatar portrays Imperialism as negative. They try to get this message across by bringing in military forces, They start mining and destroying the land by looking for unobtainium, and the Na'vi are thought as savages and mean people, but in reality they are nice creatures once you gain their…

The cartoon that I chose is called Border Security. I find it very interesting that the cartoonist chose this type of background. Also having Border Security, NOT, and Amnesty all highlighted in red. The text in this cartoon is very unique to its time, because of the major focus that has been on border control. I believe that the cartoonist targeted a specific type of reader in this cartoon. That type of reader would be the nave and ignorant people focused on this topic of boarder security and bringing up unreasonable ideas as to why we need more border control and to send them back to their country. I also find it interesting that in this cartoon the Native Americans are talking about border security to each other, about the Europeans, just to find out that the Europeans in the future kill, rape, and steal the Native Americans land and people. To me it looks like the cartoonist is trying to get a point across that we need to take a look at ourselves and what we stand by, or perhaps the cartoon just may be telling us that this is a cycle. When talking about the exigence of this cartoon, the fact that I believe everyone should open their eyes and try to relate toward each other is my main motivation on writing about this topic.…

The Political Cartoon I chose, titled “Cages Cost Money” by Dr. Theodor Geisel, or more notably known as “Dr. Suess”, is an advertisement directed to the American population, trying to convince them to purchase “War Bonds and Stamps.” I chose this cartoon due mostly to the fact that it is a non-violent, non-racist depiction of a way to convince the people of your country to provide goods for soldiers fighting. (ie: Nationalism) Most other Political Cartoons relating to other countries on opposing sides have some sort of racial slur or violence involved in it. It’s nice to see that Dr. Suess maintained his reputation through this accurate depiction of a possible future with a Clean-Cut cartoon.…

Theodore Geisel, better know as Doctor Seuss, was responsible for many political cartoons of this time period. Geisel is one of the most popular author of children’s books and used cartoons to support the US in Europe. In his cartoon, Separate Beds, Geisel shows the US in one bed fast asleep and Europe, awake, with all their problems in the other. This was released right before the Pearl Harbor attack and US involvement in the war. This uses humor to show that the US and the rest of the world are not on good terms but we like it that way. He uses the couple sleeping alone analogy to show how that we are better off staying away from their problems. After we were attacked, we could not stay away any longer, bring the US into Japan and Europe. Supporting the US army, Geisel uses the cartoon, What Have You Done Today To Help Save Your Country From Them?, to obtain support for our country. The portrayal of Hilter and Hirohito, is comical because they are making weird faces. The message is for people to feel obligated to assist our country in defeating them. Though amused, some cannot take humor seriously in this solemn situation.…

It depends om the region or group that is being viewed and what constitutes as rich or poor in the chosen economic system. Others believe that the poor are actually getting richer, but that is not necessarily true either. But globalization is not only needed by the poor, but it is also important they get what they need. It is important to note that they don’t necessarily get their fair share. There is an inequality present that does not allow the poor to get what they deserve.…

Cartoons have been use for many years and its modern usage refers to a typically non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satire, caricature, or mock different things. John Backderf, known as Derf, is a famous and recognized cartoonist “who works out of an unheated, attic studio in his Cleveland home, grew up in a rural, small town in Ohio and went to high school with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer” (“Bio”). He drew a cartoon in 1995 in which he presents an implicit theory about how and why things evolve to be “cool”. This paper will elaborate on explaining what Derf’s theory actually is, an interpretation of the meaning presented in the cartoon, and a fad or style that follows Derf’s theory.…

The film Mickey Mouse Monopoly is an overview of how sociological ideas presented in Disney films effects the cultural development of children. The idea of using “cookie cutter” stereotypes of gender and age to influence how children perceive those of not only different gender, but race, and how they should act and perceive themselves. The film also deals with the idea of how these controlling images of Disney’s are unescapable.…

The cartoon uses the IRONY that Obama is supposed to be a powerful man that stands up to anything as the president of the country, but he is instead scared to make the Republican Party angry and continues to compromise. PARODY is also used, a composition that imitates the serious manner and characteristic features of a particular work, or the distinctive style of its maker, and applies the imitation to a lowly or comically inappropriate subject. In this case, the use of parody is more powerful in its influence on affairs of current importance—the conflict between the two parties, politics--than its original composition. We know the original text that is being ridiculed. Obama said “I’m confident there is a middle ground here on which to base a compromise”, but he is bullied by the giant elephant. Also, CARICATURE, a literary style focusing on one characteristic, quality, or feature of a person or group of people, exaggerating it to a humorous level, and EXAGGERATION are used(Obama’s skinniness is enlarged so that his weakness is shown vividly).…

Political cartoons are usually used to demonstrate an illustrator's point of view during any political issue or event. More times than not a cartoon is making fun of or strongly putting down whatever that political view is. In McCutcheon’s interpretation over ratifying the treaty of Versailles his illustrations demonstrate that he doesn't agree with that ratification. McCutcheon’s obvious disagreement is shown through specific negative characteristics of the people and the objects in the cartoon.…
