Cultural Issues In Health Care
The problems that face many indigenous people in the American health care system are the same ones that minorities face such as language barriers, affordability, and distrust of the healthcare system as a whole due to the “haphazard and disrespectful treatment” they’ve received in the past (Spector., 2009., p. 225). The cultural disconnect between native peoples and the modern healthcare system is by and large a product of the centuries long ill treatment of natives by white people as even minor things such a tone can create a barrier between patient and provider and even note taking can be taboo (Spector., 2009., p. 226). Cultural conflict cause misunderstanding and can frustrate both the provider and the patient making care

    The perception of health and healthcare in the mind of the Native American culture is quite different from the culture I am from. In the world of health care and different cultures there is always room for errors in communication. For example the Native American culture in the past was much less advanced and did not want to change that. They were fine with their home remedies. However, times have changed and in order to provide more efficient healthcare to individuals they must move forward with advanced communications. This specific culture has clinics that provide health services to only Native Americans. In some states these clinics are very far behind in terms of technology. With these types of issues it is almost impossible to have a quick turn around with labs and even referrals to other doctors. This is where the flaw in communication comes in. This can even cause dangerous miscommunications with patients as well. The U. S department of human services states that Native Americans have begun to move into a better communication however, many tribes are still not financially able to fund their clinics for technology. The important thing is that these barriers are broke done so that communication is free flowing. In my opinion cultural differences will always bring difficulty in communications only because every culture has their own way of doing things especially health care. I think that it is wonderful that we are finally able to understand other cultures health care perceptions. It is important to keep looking forward to the future for the more efficient technology that will continue to improve is forms of communication in the health care industry.     Before reading The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down I knew nothing about the Hmong culture, so reading the book was eye opening. “The more we know about culture in general, and our own culture in particular, the better able we are to modify our interactions with others to provide effective care” (Clark, 2015, p. 104). After reading the Fadiman text I have a new outlook on culturally competent care. Providing this type of care if much more than calling an interpreter because it is the “easy thing to do.” We must think about the patient as a whole regarding mind, body, and spirit. As a future nurse, I must remind myself that each patient is different. We all come from unique places, upbringings, and thought processes. From the assigned texts I have gained an appreciation and respect for others way of thinking. Nurses sometimes learn to desensitize themselves from situations, but we need to be seeing things through our patients’ eyes. We must show patients the respect and care that each and every one truly deserves, especially patients who are culturally diverse. The health care system can be a scary place. Seeing health care situations through our patient’s eyes could not only make health care professionals more empathetic, but also more understanding.
