Cultural Reflection: Dia De Los Muertos
For my cultural contact credit I attended a Day of The Dead festival (Dia De Los Muertos). This event took place on october 5th, 2015 and was located at Steele Indian School Park. This was a free to the public. It was also the forth annual festival at this specific park, and I have to say for a newer festival it did not disappoint. There was a variety of activities scheduled for that day. There was candy skull decorating, live dancing and singing performances, and special appearances of La Llorana, Las Flacas and many more. The festival had a variety of booths. Some sold intricate skulls and masks. A few of them were for face painting. Many vendors bought handmade jewelry or artwork. And the rest of the tents sold delicious mexican food. I tried mexican popsicles, pan de los muertos, and corn with many toppings while I was there. What was so special about the the art vendors in particular was that only 20 were allowed at the festival. They had to submit examples of their artwork before being accepted to make sure they had the best quality products. One of the most visited tents …show more content…
I find it important to be diverse and aware of the customs of other cultures, so it would be fun to teach and talk about this with the people I know. By doing this I will be allowing people to find the beauty in this holiday as well as learning some history. Next year I think I will invite friends to come to the festival with me. I will also tell people I know about the day in hopes they can gain knowledge. I enjoy making crafts (specifically the masks) and I could possibly get in touch with people at day of the dead festivals of even first friday in downtown phoenix and see if I can have a booth to sell masks and things I've made. I am a singer as well so I could try perform songs in spanish; or play something on piano or trumpet. Plus, art and music,in my opinion, are a great way to get everyone excited about

The personnel are trained not to judge people or to tell them what they can do but, their jobs were to listen to what people say and give advice on what they can do and how they can give a helping hand. Workers also were to direct people to groups that may help them or provide necessary alternatives. The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

In 1914, Ernest Shackleton and 27 others started on a journey to be the first people to cross the Antarctic Continent. Their ship was caught in the ice, eventually crushed, and the story of how they all survived has become a classic. In this book, the story is retold with new insights and information. The authors focus on Shackleton as leader. The conclusions are very well drawn, and the connections and insights regarding "leadership" are true, valid, and extremely worthwhile. They make sense, they are useful, and they work! I've been to South Georgia and Elephant Island, and thus have some appreciation of the difficulties Shackleton and his men faced.…

The event also had many games that you could participate in and be more active. The first game that I played is Sapo which is sort of the equivalent to the American corn hole. Each team has six coins and you have a board that has different holes that are worth a certain amount of points and the team that reaches the goal score first wins. There is a frog placed in the center of the board that is worth 4000 points and is nearly impossible to make it in. They also had soccer goals set up to play since it is a huge part of the Spanish culture and is often played when there are get togethers such as cinco de mayo. To kinda of end things they served tacos and burritos as well as had two dancers that danced as part of some…

As every kid is exited to go Teak or treating for Halloween, I am excited for El Dia de los muertos (The day of the dead). This holiday is celebrated on November 1. Dia de los muertos is originally from Mexico. In the article Dia de los muertos by National geographic says “Dia de los Muertos honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism, brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores. (Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, minor holidays in the Catholic calendar. Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness)” we celebrate dia de los mueros by bringing food and drinks parties and cool activities…

In the Hispanic culture, one of the most common and well-known traditions is a Quinceañera. Going to another cultural event that is different from my own is very educational yet a rewarding experience. Some of the distinct elements that really put the event together are the experience of the event, the different phrases in that culture, verbal communication and cultural distinctiveness of the culture, and was able to understand how the Hispanic culture is different from traditional American culture.…

In addition, the festival pertained of people bringing in their classic cars to see which car was the best. What shocked me was that men worked months in order to prepare their cars for this festival. They had trophies for the best classic car contest up to 20th place so one can just imagine how many cars surrounded the festival. Also I had the opportunity to listen to live rock n roll music all day. There were different rock n roll bands alternating all day to get to hear a variety of rock n roll music. What I enjoyed most about the music was the fact that some members of the bands were playing unknown instruments to me that introduced me to new sounds and melodies. The bands were even selling their albums to the crowd in order to fundraise for the scholarship.…
