Workers at Hilton Trinidad are threatening to shut down the hotel during the Christmas season if management does not address “gender discrimination” against female kitchen staff by a new Head Chef from India. That’s not all. Workers also want the hotel’s General Manager, Leroy Browne, to honour a “gentleman’s agreement” concerning sick leave, establishment of a pension plan and permanency for weekly rated / part-time workers who’ve been on the job for 15 - 20 years.
Speaking with reporters yesterday outside President’s Ground, St Ann’s, where Hilton Trinidad was hosting a Family Day for staff members, Secretary General of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), John Julien, gave an example of the new Head Chef’s alleged discrimination mainly against the female kitchen staff.
“The man is saying that women who are having their monthlies (menstrual cycle), he doesn’t want them coming to work, and he is not going to pay them for those days. And now he’s attempting to change the seven-day roster (to) a 48-hour one...We are telling Leroy Browne, if he does not get rid of the gentleman, the hotel is going to shut down.”
Julien then called on various women action groups, including the Network of NGOs, led by Hazel Brown, the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA), and Advocates for Safe Parenthood: Improving Reproductive (ASPIRE), to lend their support to CWU’s call for “a thorough investigation into this chef.”
The union’s Secretary General also told reporters if management continues to ignore what is going on, workers who feel their health and safety are at risk, may just walk off the job during the peak Christmas period. One of the affected kitchen staff is Chef at Hilton Trinidad, Sharon Watson. Recently back on the job from vacation, she said while it’s the chef’s prerogative to change how dishes are prepared, the manner in which he does so is what she and fellow kitchen staff
