Culture Iceberg Theory

The Culture Iceberg Theory, a theory that gives people a view of the most important part of a person, the inside. Just like an iceberg, people are on only able to see 1/7 of the iceberg (the top). The culture of a human acts strikingly similar, 1/7 of a human being gets seen by others. 6/7s under the water, the bottom of the iceberg displays the elements of who the person truly represents. Most people overlook the inside of a human being. They tend to make harsh judgements based off the outside of a human. These harsh judgments create conflict between society and the person.The internal part of somebody, the part people don’t see has many parts, causing them to fight each other. The quote above best illustrates the culture iceberg theory. Marjane's personal beliefs collides with her family's beliefs because her family's beliefs reflect on western elements of culture. Thus the creation of an internal conflict between Marjane's modern culture with her religious culture. Her religious culture despises wester beliefs making it also an external conflict with herself also with her society.

The Trayvon Martin case is an example of stereotypes being used in society. The story that was told by CNN reporters said that Trayvon Martin, walking home alone with a black hoodie on at night was what triggered the killing. A man by the name of George Zimmerman saw Trayvon walking down the street in a black hoodie during midnight. George saw Trayvon walking down the street, thinking that he had been affiliated with a gang because of the way Trayvon was dressed.
