Cyber Bullying Is Dangerous Ryan Patrick Halligan was a student in Vermont who committed suicide at the age of 13 after being bullied from his classmates in real life and cyber-bullying online. Ryan received instant messages while online from his schoolmates in middle school. He was constantly insulted, taunted and threatened. These affected him so much it prompted him to commit suicide (No Bullying, 2014). Cyber bullying should be taken more serious. The following paragraphs will discuss that texting and social media have turned into weapons, cyber bullying can lead to suicide and cyber bullying can occur at any time of the day or night. Society does not realize the affects of cyber bullying and what it actually can do to a person. Texting and social media have turned into weapons. “So what does cyber bullying exactly mean? Well, as of recently, teenagers have been using all forms of communication technologies to bully others, with cell phones, social networking sites, video uploading sites, and much more. There are no limits as to what has been done or how” (End Cyber Bullying). Many feel that when it comes to cyber-bullying, it simple to just log off and get away from the negative effects. Unfortunately, it is not always as easy as that. People assume if you just walk away and move on, it just goes away. Technology does not disappear. In 2015, there were 1.96 billion social media users recorded (Statista, 2015). According to a study presented at the American Heart Association 's 48th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention most teenagers (60 percent) spend on average 20 hours per week in front of television and computer screens, a third spend closer to 40 hours per week, and about 7 percent are exposed to more than 50 hours of 'screen-time ' per week (American Heart Association, 2008) Kids call each other names; and even harass and threaten others to the point of suicide.
