Cyclade Island Female Figure

Gazing into the past we see a wide variety of artwork, one in particular is a female figure found within the MIA Museum. This sculpture is made entirely of marble and originated in the Cyclade Islands that are part of Greece. It is exactly 41.3 cm high, four cm wide at the top, and 10.8 cm wide near the bottom. It has various defined body parts such as the head, nose, neck, chest, arms, waist, legs, and feet. The female figure has very clear visual lines across the entire body. These lines help define the body parts, but mainly to help define the reproductive parts of the figure. There are horizontal lines and diagonal lines across the pelvic area to help show that the people who made this favored fertility. The diagonal lines help move the eye towards certain areas of the body, in this case it is leading the eye to the center of the legs. The horizontal lines help give the eye a stable place to rest, and also help define the arms and breasts. All of these lines are consistently thin, they do not vary in size and are used only to help bring out the different body parts on the figure. The body was well crafted and was most likely meant to survive throughout the ages. Overall the piece has unity among the body, everything connects and everything complements each other to create a human figure. It is very symmetrical with both sides being roughly the same size and shape. The base of the figure is far more heavier than the top portion because of the size and dimensions of the body.
