The theme of the short story Checkouts by Cynthia Rylant is expressed with love. The two characters in the story seem to over complicate the theme, and make it more and more difficult to decide on a particular moral, or theme. Towards the end of the story however, it begins to appear more obvious, and clear, as to what the theme is. It starts to stand out as the story progresses and we find out where they each go with their lives.
“ This is often the way of children, when they truly want a thing, to pretend they don’t. And then they grow angry when no one tried harder to give them this thing they so casually rejected.” (Rylant 77). This shows how complicated humans are.
