Safeguarding is the broad term which includes everything we do in our setting to ensure the young people are kept safe and healthy. It entails combining a whole range of policies and procedures. Child protection is only one aspect of this and how we guard children from suffering abuse. Child protection refers to anything that is put in place to protect children from suffering abuse or neglect, prevent any maltreatment which may impair a young person’s development by placing children in a positive, safe and caring environment. A serious case review or inquiry will be undertaken whenever a child dies and the suspected cause of death involves abuse or neglect or if social services have even been involved with the family. A local board in charge of safeguarding and child welfare will also consider cases wherein a young person has been neglected or abused leading to a serious injury or a case of extensive sexual abuse is reported.
