5.1. Explain the importance of play to children’s learning and development and the need for an inclusive approach.
Play is very important to children as this is how children learn. It gives them the chance to explore the world around them. It helps them develop social skills, language skills, new skills and improve existing ones. It helps children to build self-esteem. Play stimulates creativity and imagination and lets children be in charge. Children learn by leading their own play and taking part in play that is adult led.
There are 5 areas of development and playing develops children in these 5 areas. These areas are:
• Social
• Physical
• Intellectual
• Emotional
• Language
Each of these areas of learning must be fulfilled through planned play. Play can be a mixture of adult led and child led activity.
As a child care provider I would be required to provide activities and play that will support the children in the 7 areas of learning and development. These are as follows:
Communication and language
This development involves giving children the opportunity to experience a rich language environment and also to develop their confidence and skills.
Physical development
This development involves providing the opportunity to the children to interact, develop their co-ordination and helps with control.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
This development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others to form positive relationships and develop respect for others. It helps them to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings.
Literacy
This development involves encouraging the children to link sounds and letters to begin to read and write.
Mathematics
This involves helping children to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers.
