As a childminder, it is my duty to keep the children in my care safe and free of harm. In order to do so, I must consider the following:
- What risks are there to children in my home and in the garden and how could accidents be minimised? - What risks are there to children off site when on an outing? - Who will be collecting the child / children? - What food to provide and how to ensure that meals are prepared and stored according to the food hygiene guidelines? - Are all of my policies and procedures in place and do I know what to do in case of an emergency? - How can I plan my day / week so that all the children’s routines and needs are met? - How much supervision will children need based on what activities they are doing, their age and where they are?
To address the above questions, I have drawn up the following list of tasks that I believe will make my setting a safe and happy place to be for minded children. It is by no means an exhaustive list of tasks but this will send me on a good start to providing a safe environment for children to play and thrive in.
I will:
1. Risk assess each room that children will have access to as well as the garden and have a risk assessment checklist for each area which will be done on a regular basis – this will be done by getting down at a child’ level to see the room from their view and see potential hazards adults might not consider dangerous 2. Risk assess when planning an outing and get parents’ consent to take children on an outing 3. Draw up a plan of the house and mark the emergency route out of the house should there be a need to evacuate the property – make sure that children are familiar with this 4. Invest in a proper first aid box which will be stored out of reach of children 5. Attend a first aid course and refresh the qualification as required by law 6. Have a solid evacuation
