novels in Marathi and has translated Richard Burton’s Arabian Nights.
Gauri Deshpande’s poetry deals mostly with everyday life and she writes often to release the tensions which keep building in her and demand utterance, the experience being “transmitted in terms of imagery, rhythm and nuances of words”. In the words of C.P. Singh her poems “show an artist in making, a struggling towards the happy blending between deep experiences and a congruent poetic form that makes a gem of art out of the raw metal of personal life” (“Between Desire and Vision: A Study in the Poetry of Gauri Deshpande” in Indian Poetry in English Ed. Hari Mohan Prasad, p.223) Her Indian Treescape is a typical illus¬tration of her attempt to present a subject matter which is totally Indian in a language which is both rhetorical and evocative show¬ing an acute sensitivity to the colours and shades as well as the sounds of nature.
In fact there is a Keatsian sensuousness in Deshpande’s poetry which shows the poet’s rapturous love of colours and perfumes. But the themes which are recurrent and dominant in her poetry are isolation and lost love. Many of these poems show how Deshpande, like Kamala Das, writes in an unin¬hibited way but as Eunice de Souza has observed, there is in her poetry “a great deal about blood and sweat and clenched teeth, and about “lashing” and “throbbing”, the final effect for the reader is not one of intensity but embarrassment”. “The lady doth lash too much” As Ms de Souza further observes, there is no wit or humour or irony or something “to shape this amorphous mess”.
Ms. Deshpande is at her best really in short poems and “The Female of the Species” is one in which she conveys a kind of feminine feeling. While this poem, does not illustrate either Despande’s ability to evoke a world of colours and sound or to project more thoughtful and provocative ideas as in poems like “Renaissance” or “Prometheus and Orpheus” it is a comparatively simple poem which arises from

She sharply admonishes females who criticize her wild and passionate flings, choosing instead to honor the traditional rules of their maternal role models who are ‘long necks Of neighbours sitting where their mothers sat” (5-6). Millay is proud of the critically acclaimed work she accomplishes during the day within the boundaries of “the lofty tower [she] labour[s] at,” but she is clearly unashamed of the sordid affairs in which she engages in the evening (3). The author readily accepts full responsibility for both her accomplishments and her transgressions acknowledging, “To what it is, this tower; it is my own” (10). She reprimands her critics who condemn her insatiable sexual appetite responding that those encounters are the stimulants which create the passion for her poetry. While her contemporaries may offer a more sterile, less scandalous alternative to her work, Millay’s poetry is the result of her personal experiences of “anguish; pride; and burning thought; And lust is there, and nights not spent alone”…

Our attachment to nature is represented in significant interactions that occur through events and situations . An individual’s value of nature may be challenged through their experience and the obstacles they have encountered throughout their lives. Alain De Botton’s philosophical novel The Art of Travel explores our attraction to nature and how it affects our inner being. This is also highlighted in Albert Namatjira’s painting Ljalkaindirma which conveys the artist’s links between his Aboriginal heritage and its culture. Both these texts explore humanity’s connection to landscapes and our own lives through their unique methods of representation.…

Neruda uses elements of nature as embodiment of his ideas. Throughout his career, he saw himself as a product of nature. He would continuously incorporate ‘natural’ subjects and themes in his work, somewhat constructing a parallel world to his. He loved the organic feel provided by creatures of the earth and the basic elements. ‘Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’ states his past experiences as a lover and shows his explicit celebration of sexuality. In the poem Body of a Woman, he incorporates this technique effectively that he is able to clearly describe his love for the female subject.…

We recommend that the bank extend the line of credit loan of $75,000 at 8.5% to CCWC and institute the other aspects of Mr. Robb’s suggestions. A mandatory guarantee by the principals, annual account cleanup and using CCWC’s account receivable as collateral would all reduce the risk to the bank. Even if CCWC goes bankrupt, it does not have any other loans on its books and a current ratio at about 1.2. (Exhibit 1) Since only a small percentage of its inventory is work-in-progress, its assets can be liquidated at a price that assures the bank the ability to recoup its investment.…

Power is a fundamental sociological concept, affecting every level of society and influencing our daily lives in countless ways. Because power pervades social life, to understand how society works we must consider its role in various social contexts. As noted political philosopher and social critic Bertrand Russell (1938/2004, 4) put it, “the fundamental concept in social science is Power, in the same way in which Energy is the fundamental concept in physics.” Power, like energy, takes many forms and is essential in understanding why things happen as they do in society.…

“Why does one write? Because sometimes one feels like saying something. Because some question disturb us. At times these may be questioned addressed to ourselves. Or to the community around us. Or to our time. Or the whole of mankind. At time to nature, and to God.” This seemingly general statement on the primal springs of literature M.T. Vasudevan Nair make in Kathakinte Kala (story teller’s art) can very well apply to M.T’s own writing that spans four fertile decades. When M.T started writing his narratives in the fifties of the last century, the story writing tradition in Malayalam was controlled largely by the ideology of what could be called ‘renaissance fiction’, which modelled itself on the social realism of such nineteenth…

Many of the Vedic gods are deified forces of nature. They have been very beautifully and poetically personified in hymns and prayers. The Vedic mind looked upon forests as the ‘ecological redresser of man’s excessive activism’ and as ‘an intimate part of his life and experience’. In a very fascinating hymn, which is addressed to the Spirit of the forest, the Vedic poet says:…

Dutt's use of descriptive detail in the first two stanzas help to create a uniquely Indian landscape. Her description of the tree's trunk as a python to open the poem helps to do this in the most immediate of stages. At the same time, the convergence of different animals around one natural element also helps to do this. There is a certain feel of the poem that brings to the light the idea that a timeless quality of the tree and the world around it possess. I think that this is what I find the most fascinating about the poem for this might be how India could be described to the West, and given that Dutt was one of the first poets to be read by Western audiences, this could be part of her intent.…

In the contemporary Marathi literature Indira Sant’s poetry has been considered the most influential. Very few poems of Indira Sant such as “Compassion”, “Mistlike” (1957) and “Spellbound” (1982) which talks about the separation of love and the pain in loneliness were translated in to English. Hemant Divate is the pioneer of twentieth century Marathi poetry. The essence of contemporary poetry prevails in his works. Emotions of love and loneliness are also seen in his poems like “Greeting” and “Boat.” (2000)…
