Chopped and Screwed: DJ Screw 's Extension in Music The Hip Hop music genre, on the rise since the 1970 's, includes many variations of beats and melodies which unlike other music genres, do not follow a certain pattern or outline. Especially during this day and age, melodic tracks are free to sound however the artist wants them to, without needing to adhere to a certain pattern. Additionally, the Disc Jockey will make the music sound like it is skipping over and over again for roughly two to three beats per bar. This is what adds to the uniqueness of chopped and screwed: these elements of altering the vocals on the tracks can happen at any time, and can sound like the track is skipping or lagging, which adds an element of surprise and unexpectedness to the whole track. In other words, the Disc Jockey uses syncopation throughout the track to make it sound temporarily shifted. One of DJ Screw 's most well known tracks, “Sailin ' Da South” from his album “3 'N the Mornin ' Part 2” (which almost took a full year to create), (iTunes) is an excellent example of all these traits. Chopped and Screwed could sound very strange to a new listener, however, the more one listens to the genre, the more mesmeric and memorable the track could sound. What started off as an accident, propelled the young Disc Jockey into a career full of fans, money, and business. DJ Screw was one of the few entertainers whose talents caused people from all over his city to drive to his door demanding mixtapes- what he did best. His talent and invention for the Chopped and Screwed genre has changed the way that Disc Jockeys mix music in this day and age, and has definitely influenced many other young Disc Jockeys to play around and experiment with their own briefcase- their turntables. DJ Screw ultimately put a new twist on the Hip Hop sound and reframed a genre that was already popular, and altered it to create a whole other category.
