Assignment No. 1
Title: Analysis of Number of Dacoity Cases Reported and Value of Property Taken Away by Place of Occurrence (City-wise) Report published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Submitted by: Mitesh Karwa [Section- D; Roll No: 1311238]
By studying the 2011 and 2012 data from ‘Crime in India’ published by the NCRB, which has been the principal reference for crime statistics in India for almost 70 years [1] [2], an effort has been made to analyse the number of dacoity cases in 53 major cities of India and the value of goods taken away in 2011 and 2012. The study aims to focus on the trend in criminal record data and suggest additional data that may be reported by the NCRB to make future studies more useful. The key findings are as follows:1. In the selected 53 cities:A total of 431 cases of dacoity were reported in 2012, resulting in loss of property worth Rs. 44.497 crores, against 434 cases reported in 2011, resulting in loss of property worth Rs. 29.589 crores, in 2011.
Year-on-Year Comparison of No. of cases of dacoity reported and value of goods stolen in 2011 and 2012
5000 4000 3000 2000 1000 0 Number 2011 2012 Value 434 431 2959 4450
So the number of cases reported has marginally fallen, but the value of goods stolen has increased by 50%. 2. There is very little correlation between the number of incidents of dacoity reported in the 53 cities and the value of goods stolen. For most cities, the number of incidents of dacoity have not changed significantly, but the value of goods stolen has changed dramatically. Chandigarh City stands out among the 53 cities for maximum loss reported (12.005 crores) in 2011 but the loss was only 1.2 lakhs in 2012. This might be because of some large dacoities in such cities (e.g. Chandigarh in 2011). Indeed, on checking the break-up for the incidents reported in Chandigarh, the entire amount of 12.005 crores has been stolen from residential premises only, in 5 incidents, further
