Gatsby had a past that he kept secret, he hardly brought up that conversation and lied about it when it was necessary. For example, James stated that he came from a formal wealthy family. For instance, in this time period of Gatsby’s life all he desired was to have Daisy back in his life. Gatsby understood that Daisy was now married and had a new life, but he insisted in reliving the past that he had with her. Reliving the past with Daisy was Gatsby’s way of dealing with his societal past. The desire to achieve his goals contributed to the whole novel in a way that Gatsby’s intents to always satisfy Daisy and try to meet with her made the reader understand what type of person Gatsby was.
