The first night of Dale, everyone jumps up and down as they hear the news that Smaug is dead. Thorin thanks Roac and asks everyone to go back to the mountain to find food. Later that day, Lake-men and the Elves come running to the Mountain hearing about Smaug. Early next morning, Thorin sees the spearmen marching up the valley. As soon as the spearmen approaches, Thorin greets them. The spearmen starts arguing with Thorin. Both of them fight back and forth. In chapter 17, Thorin says, “‘ That stone was my father’s, and is mine,’ he said. ‘Why should I purchase my own?’” The Arkenstone means so much to Thorin, because the Arkenstone represents the heart of the mountain. It is the most valuable treasure Thorin will ever get. Anyways, Bard gives Thorin until the next day to and get the portion that is set against the Arkenstone. While Bard was leaving, Thorin sends messengers by Roac telling Dain about the stone and asking him to come quickly. When Dain arrives with his people, Bard comes to meet them. Soon the battle starts and everyone forgets about Thorin. As soon as they find Thorin, part of the walls crashes into the pool. Thorin uses his axe and nothing seems to harm him.
