It is said that music does not and cannot influence behaviour, but with a dance craze to complement every song, I'd say the influence is real. Let me draw reference to one of the most popular songs presently pervading our airwaves, "6:30". For the time tellers this is all innocent fun, a perfect display of one's youthful flexibility.
I recently "took a lime" as they say and was quite surprised at the reaction to that song. Almost like clock work every woman upon hearing that oh so famous line disappeared into the floor leaving only their gyrating buttocks to fend for themselves. Then I got to thinking, have our young women popularized mating rituals through the use of dance? And if so does that not take away from our already limited power? Can we, after bowing before a man argue equality?
This article however fitting, is not a feminist rant, rather an abstract insight into this nation's future. No creativity is required to write and produce a song. No body exists to monitor or evaluate quality and content. There is no room to nuture/develop these raw talents, therefore, our music will continue to stimulate reproduction of generations lacking the ambition to dream, let alone break the norm of complacency. We are quickly tik tok and pa-taking our way into a slump, without realizing that we have changed mental addresses.
Will the soundtrack to a child's existence continue to be a heavily demeaning dancehall mantra? Or will we seek to find mutually beneficial ways to cultivate screaming creativity. St. Lucia's greatest resource is its human resource, letting it die out would be suicide.
