One artist who defined the form of dance theater the most was Pina Bausch (1940-2009). She was much influenced by the German expressionist dance of the early 20th century which was developed by Rudolf Laban, Kurt Jooss, and Mary Wigman. Pina Bausch was very famous for creating thought provoking and humane choreographies that had a lot of imagery. She had a very distinct style and very soon started to define the expression of “Dance Theater”.
Another developed “physical theater” dance group is DV8 which was founded in 1986 and is based in England. This company was founded by Lloyed Newson. This dance group as well was frustrated with dances that are not related to life issues and so decided to say more and louder through their form of dance physical theater.
Physical Theatre is used to describe any mode of performance that pursues storytelling or drama through primarily physical and secondarily mental means.
Several traditions of performance all describe themselves as "physical theatre." It can be used to help the actors gain a better understanding of the plays, but there has been some considerable confusion as to how physical theatre should be defined. The means of expression seem to be primarily physical rather than textual, often augmented by musical elements.
Various physical theatre companies, such as Forced Entertainment, Gecko and the Double Edge Theatre all use differing but nonetheless devising-based processes.
